Chapter 4 - The Serpent's Trail

The perimeter wall of the Barrington Hills estate was twelve feet of solid, reinforced concrete topped with razor wire and advanced thermal cameras. Yet, pinned to the center of the massive iron security gate by a heavy hunting knife, was a black envelope sealed with crimson wax.

Rain had begun to spit from the dark Chicago sky, turning the gravel driveway into a slick, reflective mirror.

Rourke stood beneath the harsh glare of the halogen security lights, his dark wool coat pulled tight against the wind. Rafe stood to his left, while Vance hovered slightly to the right, his hands tucked neatly into his pockets, an expression of calculated concern plastered across his handsome face.

Ivy stood a few paces back, holding a heavy flashlight to illuminate the scene, having followed Rourke down from the house the moment she heard the alarm.

"Don't touch it with your bare hands, boss," Rafe warned, pulling a pair of latex gloves from his pocket. "Could be laced with contact poison or a pressure trigger."

Rourke didn't listen to the warning. With a swift, practiced motion, he stepped forward, grabbed the handle of the hunting knife, and yanked it free from the iron gate. The black envelope dropped into his gloved palm. He tore the wax seal open and pulled out a thick sheet of heavy, cream-colored cardstock.

The lighting was dim, but Rourke’s eyes scanned the single line of handwritten text instantly.

When he read the words, the temperature around him seemed to drop to absolute zero. The massive mafia boss froze, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.

"Boss?" Vance asked smoothly, leaning in with a wolfish curiosity. "What does it say? Who is it from?"

Rourke didn't answer immediately. He folded the paper slowly, his knuckles turning white inside his leather gloves.

"It's from an old friend," Rourke said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, devoid of all human warmth. "Someone who thinks the debt from seven years ago was never fully paid."

Ivy watched him closely from the shadows of her umbrella. She saw the way his broad shoulders stiffened, the way his eyes tracked the dark treeline beyond the gate. She recognized that look—it was the look of a general who had just realized his inner circle had been compromised.

"We need to sweep the estate," Rourke commanded, turning to Rafe. "Double the guards on the nursery wing. No one enters or leaves without my explicit biometric clearance. Vance—pull the access logs for the security cameras facing the west gate between midnight and 2:00 a.m. I want to know who walked right past three motion sensors without tripping an alarm."

"Right away, boss," Vance said, his smile never reaching his eyes as he turned toward the security annex.

As the guards scattered to execute Rourke’s orders, Rourke walked back toward Ivy. The rain fell heavier now, slicking his dark hair across his forehead. He stopped right in front of her, the black envelope clutched tightly in his fist.

"Go back inside, Ivy," he said, his voice softer now, though still laden with iron. "Lock your doors. Do not open them for anyone except me."

"Mr. Faust—"

"Do as I say, Ivy," he interrupted, his gaze burning into hers with fierce, possessive intensity. "I can protect my children against external threats. But tonight... I realized the danger isn't just outside these walls anymore."

He walked past her toward the main entrance, leaving Ivy standing in the cold rain with the chilling realization that the web of betrayal inside the Faust estate was tightening around them all.

Later that night, unable to sleep, Ivy sat at the antique mahogany desk in her suite, reviewing the digital tablet Rourke had given her for estate communication. She bypassed the standard interface, tapping into the backdoor diagnostic logs of the security system—a trick she had learned from a tech-savvy hacker friend back in Atlanta.

She scrolled through the west gate logs for the hours leading up to the discovery of the black envelope.

Motion sensor 4B: Offline. Camera 12: Looping playback detected.

Someone inside the mansion had hacked the firewall from a local terminal. Someone with administrator-level access. Someone who knew exactly when the guards rotated their patrols.

Ivy’s breath caught in her throat as the terminal ID popped up on her screen: ADMIN_VAL_02.

Vance.

Before she could process the implications, a soft, muffled click echoed from the hallway outside her bedroom door.

Click.

Someone was trying to pick the electronic deadbolt.
