Chapter 7 - The Bullet, the Blood, and the Ghost

Upstairs in the grand parlor, the tense negotiations between Rourke, Marcone, and Marcus Vance were abruptly shattered by the shrill wail of the basement security breach alarm.

Rourke stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the marble floor.

"What is the meaning of this?" Sal Marcone demanded, reaching for a cigar.

"Stay here," Rourke growled, his hand flashing to his pistol.

Before Rourke could reach the door, a series of deafening explosions rocked the perimeter walls.

BOOM! BOOM!

Thick grey smoke billowed from the west wing ventilation shafts. Power cut out instantly, plunging the grand mansion into emergency red-lit shadow. Automatic backup generators hummed to life, casting an eerie crimson glow over the halls.

Gunfire exploded through the grand foyer, and in seconds everyone was running for their lives—tables overturned, crystal glasses shattered, screams swallowed by panic. Mercenaries in tactical black gear poured through the shattered front windows, automatic rifles raised, targeting the guards and sweeping toward the stairwells.

Their objective wasn't Rourke. Their objective was the nursery.

"Ezra! Mabel!" Rourke roared, drawing his weapon as he cut down two mercenaries in the hallway with ruthless, pinpoint precision.

In the middle of the chaos stood a woman no one expected to move toward danger—the one person who should have fled first.

Ivy burst from the service stairs, her hair wild, her breathing ragged, racing toward the east wing corridor where the twins' room was located. She had managed to break away from Vance in the basement, but she knew the hit squad was already heading upstairs.

From the top of the stairs, a mercenary in a tactical helmet raised his assault rifle, his sights locked directly on the open nursery door where Ezra and Mabel were peering out in absolute terror.

Rourke was pinned behind a marble pillar thirty feet away, exchanging gunfire with three other gunmen, unable to reach his children in time.

"Daddy!" Ezra screamed.

THEN, without hesitation, Ivy stepped into the line of fire.

She didn't duck. She didn't cower. She threw her body squarely between the barrel of the assassin's rifle and the terrified children just as the trigger was pulled.

CRACK.

The bullet struck Ivy squarely in the upper chest. The impact threw her backward against the white wainscoting, a spray of dark blood blooming across her shirt as she slid down the wall onto the hardwood floor.

"NO!" Rourke’s voice tore through the mansion—a sound of pure, unadulterated agony that defied human description.

Rourke vaulted over the marble barrier, emptying his clip into the assassin with blind, berserker fury until the man crumpled to the floor. Rourke didn't look at the dead mercenary. He dropped to his knees beside Ivy, his massive hands hovering over her bleeding chest, terrified to touch her, terrified of what he would find.

"Ivy... look at me," Rourke choked out, his voice breaking completely. "Stay with me. Look at me!"

Ivy coughed, blood staining her lips, her eyes fluttering open as she looked up into his devastated face. She reached up with a blood-stained hand, pressing her fingers against his lapel.

"The... the keycard..." she whispered, her voice failing. "In my pocket... Vance..."

She lost consciousness, her hand slipping away from his coat and hitting the floor.

Around them, the gunfire abruptly died down. Rafe and the surviving guards swarmed the hallway, neutralizing the remaining mercenaries, dragging a bleeding, captured Vance out from the back service stairs in zip-ties.

As Vance was shoved onto his knees beside Rourke, the mercenary’s helmet rolled away, and a silver necklace slipped out from beneath Ivy’s torn collar—a heavy silver medallion engraved with a soaring hawk clutching a scale of justice.

Sal Marcone, who had cautiously stepped out of the parlor, caught sight of the medallion. His jaw dropped. He looked at Ivy’s pale face, and then at the silver crest.

"My God..." Marcone whispered, his voice trembling with superstitious terror. "That crest... that's the seal of the Vance-Blackwood protective unit. The federal-underground task force that wiped out half the East Coast syndicates twenty years ago."

Marcus Vance went white as a ghost.

Rourke slowly stood up, his face no longer human—it was the face of an angel of death. He turned his terrifying, blue-white eyes toward Vance.

"You didn't just target my house," Rourke whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, cosmic fury. "You targeted an undercover federal operative who was placed here to dismantle the entire syndicate network—and you made her my children's protector."

Vance trembled, opening his mouth to speak, but Rourke didn't give him the chance. He raised his pistol and pulled the trigger.
