Chapter 3 - The Birth Amid the Chaos

“She’s crowning,” the nurse shouted, her voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room. “Dr. Vance isn't going to make it. We’re doing this now.”

The medical staff sprang into motion, instruments clicking, bright surgical lights snapping on overhead. Genevieve’s fingers locked onto the metal rails of the bed so hard her skin turned white.

“Eve, look at me,” Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a steady, hypnotic rhythm. He had risen from the floor, standing right beside her head, his large hand gently brushing the wet hair away from her forehead. He didn't care about the blood, the sweat, or the monitors. “Look at me. Breathe with me. Just like that. In... and out.”

Genevieve hated how easily her body responded to him, how his voice—the voice that had haunted her nightmares and her dreams for seven months—still anchored her when the pain threatened to pull her under. She squeezed her eyes shut, let out a ragged scream, and pushed with every ounce of strength left in her broken, exhausted frame.

The storm outside seemed to roar in response, shaking the brick and steel of Saint Catherine’s Medical Center.

“Push, Genevieve! One more big one!” the nurse urged, her hands steady.

Alessandro leaned down, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that burned away all the anger, leaving only pure, raw devotion. “You are the strongest person I have ever known, Eve. Do this for us. Come back to me.”

With one final, soul-shattering cry, Genevieve threw her head back against the pillow.

Then, cutting sharply through the roar of the rain, came a sound that froze time: the high, indignant, beautiful wail of a newborn child.

“It’s a girl,” the nurse gasped, lifting a tiny, wriggling, purple-red bundle into the air, wrapping her instantly in a warm sterile blanket. “A healthy baby girl.”

Genevieve collapsed back onto the pillows, her chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged gasps. Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and silent. She turned her face away, too weak to fight, too exhausted to celebrate.

Alessandro stood motionless.

The nurse carried the tiny infant over, gently resting the baby against Genevieve’s chest. The baby’s cries softened into tiny, rhythmic whimpers as she felt the warmth of her mother’s skin.

Genevieve looked down, her fingers trembling as she touched the baby’s dark, damp tufts of hair. “My baby,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “My sweet girl.”

Alessandro stared at the infant.

In that tiny face, he saw the exact shape of Genevieve’s nose, the faint curve of her jawline. She was so impossibly small, so fragile, that a single misplaced breath could shatter her. He looked up from the child to Genevieve, whose eyes were fixed on the infant with a fierce, protective terror—the look of a mother who knew her husband’s world was built on violence, and who feared he would turn their daughter into collateral damage.

“Hold her,” Genevieve whispered without looking at him.

Alessandro’s breath caught. “Eve... I’m too rough. Look at my hands.”

“Hold her, Alessandro,” she repeated, her voice steady now, carrying an quiet command that brooked no argument. “She’s your daughter. Meet your consequence.”

Slowly, his broad, calloused hands—hands that had signed death warrants, held weapons, and broken men—reached out. The nurse gently guided the small bundle into his arms.

When the baby’s tiny, weightless form rested against his chest, something shifted deep inside Alessandro’s soul. A dam broke. A tear—the first he had shed since he was a boy—slid silently down his cheek and dropped onto the baby’s blanket.

The infant shifted, letting out a soft sigh, and instinctively curled her tiny hand around his pinky finger.

Alessandro stopped breathing. He looked down at the tiny hand wrapped around his finger, and in that single second, the billionaire kingpin, the ruthless underworld boss, ceased to exist. There was only a father, kneeling at the altar of a love he had almost destroyed.

“Hello, little one,” he choked out, his voice thick with uncontainable emotion. “I’m your dad. And I promise you... no one will ever touch you. Not the world. And never, ever me.”

May you like

Genevieve watched him from the bed, her heart aching as she saw the genuine, agonizing transformation on his face. But even as the warmth spread through her chest, a cold spike of dread pierced her mind.

Because outside those hospital doors, the men Alessandro had trusted—the men who had helped him build his empire—were still out there. And they knew she had been found.
