Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Betrayal

Three days later, the VIP maternity suite on the eighth floor of Saint Catherine’s was locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary.
Mateo Cruz stood outside the double doors, flanked by four armed operatives in plain clothes. Inside, the room was quiet, filled with the soft, sweet scent of white orchids that Alessandro had replaced every morning, though this time, he had checked every single stem himself for hidden bugs or tracking devices.
Genevieve sat propped up in bed, cradling the baby—whom they had named Elena—while Alessandro sat in a leather armchair beside her, feeding her sliced fruit with quiet, methodical care.
The tension between them had shifted over the last seventy-two hours. The explosive fury of the delivery night had given way to a fragile, tentative truce. He hadn't left the room once. He slept sitting up in the armchair, his eyes opening at the slightest rustle of the sheets. He watched over them like a dragon guarding its hoard, but he hadn't tried to force her to return to Southampton, and he hadn't mentioned taking Elena away.
“You need to eat more, Eve,” Alessandro said softly, offering a piece of melon on a silver fork.
“I’m full, Alessandro,” she replied quietly, though she took a small bite just to keep the peace. She looked at him, studying the dark circles under his eyes and the tension in his broad shoulders. “You haven't slept properly in days. And your men are patrolling the hallway like we’re under siege.”
“We are under siege,” Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a cold, flat register. He set the plate down on the tray table. “Vincenzo Bell hasn't answered his phone in forty-eight hours.”
Genevieve’s breath hitched. The fork slipped from her fingers, clattering softly against the ceramic plate.
Vincenzo Bell. Alessandro’s longtime counselor, his shadow, the man who had whispered poison into Alessandro’s ear for seven months, convincing him that rival syndicates had kidnapped Genevieve to weaken his reign.
“Vincenzo?” Genevieve whispered, a cold dread washing over her. “What does he have to do with this?”
“Everything,” Alessandro said, his eyes turning dark as obsidian.
Two hours ago, while Genevieve was sleeping, Mateo had intercepted a scrambled communication originating from one of Vincenzo’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. It wasn't just a financial ledger; it was a blueprint.
Vincenzo hadn't been searching for Genevieve to bring her home. He had been funding the private investigators who tracked her credit card slips in Philadelphia, not to help Alessandro, but to eliminate her before she could expose the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme Vincenzo had been running through the charity board Genevieve chaired.
It was Vincenzo who had leaked forged documents to make it look like the Costa crew had targeted her. It was Vincenzo who had engineered the isolation, ensuring Alessandro remained trapped in a paranoid frenzy of rage and vengeance while the true threat operated right beside him.
“He used my love for you as a weapon,” Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with a rage so deep, so terrifying, it made the air in the room feel heavy. “He knew if I thought you were taken, I would tear the city apart and look at no one else. He wanted you dead, Eve. And he wanted me broken.”
Genevieve stared at him, her eyes wide with horror, followed swiftly by a wave of profound sorrow. She reached out, her hand finding his across the mattress, her fingers wrapping around his large, calloused palm.
“You didn't know,” she murmured, her voice filled with forgiveness that he didn't deserve. “He played us both, Alessandro.”
Alessandro turned his hand over, gripping hers tightly, bringing her knuckles to his lips and pressing a long, desperate kiss against them. “I let him into our home. I trusted him over my own wife. If anything had happened to you... if anything had happened to Elena...”
“We’re here,” Genevieve interrupted softly, pulling his face toward her so he had no choice but to look into her eyes. “We’re alive. But Vincenzo isn't going to just disappear, Alessandro. He knows you found out.”
Before Alessandro could answer, the secure phone on the bedside table buzzed harshly.
Alessandro picked it up on the first ring, his voice razor-sharp. “Report.”
Mateo’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and laced with static. “Boss, we’ve got a problem. The lobby security feeds just went dark. Three unmarked vans just pulled into the ambulance bay. They aren't cops, and they aren't hospital staff. They’re Vincenzo’s cleaners.”

Alessandro stood up so fast his chair overturned. The gentle, remorseful husband vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by the apex predator who ruled the New York underworld.
“Lock down the floor,” Alessandro commanded, his voice freezing cold. “Shoot anyone who steps out of the stairwells. I’m coming down.”
