Chapter 4 - The Subpoena and the Digital Fortress

By Sunday afternoon, the Peterson family's desperate damage control machine was running at full throttle.
While Sophie slept peacefully in her hospital bed, recovering from her concussion, I set up a makeshift command center on the small fold-out table in the corner of the room. Using my laptop, encrypted VPNs, and my professional network contacts in cybersecurity, I began assembling an airtight legal and digital dossier against my brother.
At 2:00 PM, Officer Martinez returned to the hospital room, accompanied by a young assistant district attorney named David Hayes. Hayes looked sharp in a charcoal suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
"Mrs. Carter," Hayes said, shaking my hand firmly. "Officer Martinez briefed me on the situation. We have formal statements, medical records detailing the blunt force trauma to your daughter's head, and your testimony regarding the planted iPhone."
"Have you secured the hotel CCTV footage?" I asked immediately.
Hayes smiled, opening his briefcase and pulling out a certified digital manifest. "We served an emergency preservation order and a judicial subpoena to the Whitmore Hotel's IT director at 8:00 AM this morning. The footage has been successfully downloaded, cryptographically hashed to prevent tampering, and secured in the DA's evidence vault."
"Thank God," I breathed, closing my eyes in profound relief.
"There's more," Hayes added, leaning forward. "We didn't just get the video. We got the audio feeds from the ceiling-mounted acoustic sensors above the head table. We can hear everything Preston said when he slipped that phone into your daughter's coat pocket while pretending to hug her goodbye earlier in the evening."
I stared at him, my heart skipping a beat. "He hugged her?"
"Right after the cake cutting," Martinez confirmed, pulling up a still frame on his tablet from the preliminary hotel files Arthur Vance had discreetly leaked to them. "Watch right here. Your brother leans down, pats Sophie on the shoulder, tells her what a good flower girl she's been, and slips his titanium iPhone directly into the deep exterior pocket of her denim jacket. It took less than two seconds. Total sleight of hand."
The image on the tablet screen was damning beyond words. Preston's face, usually twisted in arrogant entitlement, wore a sickeningly sweet mask as his hand dipped into my daughter's coat.
"He planned this," I whispered, the full, grotesque magnitude of his malice washing over me. "He knew he wanted a scandal. He wanted to humiliate me and my daughter publicly to cement his status as the infallible golden child, even at a wedding."
"Well, his golden days are officially over," Hayes said, snapping his briefcase shut. "I've just signed an arrest warrant for Preston Carter. Charges include aggravated battery of a minor, child endangerment, and felony malicious prosecution. We're picking him up this evening."

"Where?" I asked.
"At the Whitmore Hotel brunch suite," Hayes replied. "Where he's currently hosting his post-wedding celebratory champagne brunch with his bride and your parents, completely oblivious to the fact that the legal hammer is about to drop."
