Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Within twenty-four hours of Preston’s arrest, the Peterson-Carter family empire began to disintegrate like a sandcastle hit by a tidal wave.

The story broke Monday morning on the front page of the Chicago Tribune and every major news outlet across the Midwest. The headline was merciless: ELITE GROOM ARRESTED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON EIGHT-YEAR-OLD NIECE AT WHITMORE HOTEL WEDDING.

Accompanying the article were still frames from the CCTV footage showing Preston planting the phone, followed by the horrifying swing of the oak menu board.

The fallout was instantaneous and catastrophic:

The Bride's Family: Senator Sterling’s office released an immediate, blistering press release announcing that Chloe Sterling had filed for an emergency annulment of the marriage, citing fraud, extreme cruelty, and criminal conduct.

The Corporate Board: Preston’s high-profile architectural firm suspended him indefinitely without pay, issuing a statement condemning violence against children.

The Social Exile: My mother and father found their phone numbers blocked by country club presidents, charity boards, and lifelong friends. The very society they had spent forty years curating through bribes, posturing, and exclusion slammed its doors firmly in their faces.

On Tuesday afternoon, my mother called me for the first time since the wedding.

I was sitting in my living room, watching Sophie paint watercolors on her new art easel, when my phone chimed. I let it ring twice before answering.

"Evelyn," my mother's voice sounded hollow, broken, and ancient. All the arrogance was gone, replaced by the pathetic whimper of a woman whose entire world had burned to ash.

"What do you want, Mother?" I asked calmly, keeping my voice level.

"Please... you have to drop the charges," she sobbed openly. "Preston is facing ten years in prison. His life is ruined. If you just sign an affidavit saying it was a misunderstanding, the DA might—"

"Mother, listen to me very carefully," I interrupted, my tone freezing the air in the room. "The day your golden boy smashed an oak board into my eight-year-old daughter's head while she bled on the floor, and you told me not to make a scene... you made your choice."

"Evelyn, we're your family!"

"No," I corrected her softly. "For thirty years, I was the servant in a house built for a tyrant. I spent my whole life begging you to love me, and you rewarded my loyalty by telling me my child's skull fracture was an inconvenience."

I paused, looking at Sophie as she proudly held up a painting of a bright yellow sun.

"Preston is going to trial. The evidence is bulletproof. And if you, or Father, or anyone else in that toxic family tries to contact me or my daughter again, I will add obstruction of justice charges to your names so fast your heads will spin. Goodbye, Mother."

I hung up the phone, walked over to settings, and blocked her number permanently.
