Chapter 3 - The Velvet Cage of the Grand Ballroom

While medicine and law assembled their weapons in the penthouse, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel shimmered under ten thousand crystal chandeliers.

It was the fifth anniversary gala of Helix One, the crown jewel of New York’s tech and logistics sector. The room was a suffocating sea of black tuxedos, glittering diamond tiaras, champagne flutes, and desperate ambition. Every venture capitalist, hedge fund manager, and tech mogul worth mentioning had secured an invitation.

At the center of it all stood Grant Mercer.

He wore a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo that fit his athletic frame to perfection. His dark hair was swept back, his smile disarming and radiant as he accepted congratulations from a group of senior partners from Goldman Sachs.

“Grant, my boy, helix one’s Q3 logistics valuation is breaking records,” an older board member beamed, raising his champagne glass. “You’ve turned a regional shipping software into a global titan. And doing it all while maintaining such a picturesque family life... truly inspiring.”

Grant chuckled, a warm, self-deprecating sound that always charmed investors. “Thank you, Arthur. But I couldn't do it without stability at home. Amelia sends her deepest regrets—she caught a terrible migraine this evening, poor dear. But stability is the bedrock of enterprise.”

Beside him, resting her hand lightly in the crook of his arm, stood Serena Cross.

Serena was breathtaking in a backless, emerald-green silk gown that clung to her silhouette like liquid glass. Resting against the pale skin of her collarbone was a necklace of unheated Zambian emeralds surrounded by platinum diamonds—the exact necklace Amelia’s grandmother had left her, which Grant had discreetly transferred from the estate safe into Serena’s jewelry box three weeks prior.

Serena sipped her champagne, her blue eyes scanning the room with triumphant satisfaction. Every head turned when she walked past. Every woman in the room envied her position; every man wondered how Grant Mercer had managed to keep such an exquisite creature so close without triggering a public scandal.

“You play the devoted husband so well, Grant,” Serena murmured softly against his lapel as the older investors drifted away toward the string quartet.

Grant smiled down at her, his hand resting warmly on the small of her back. “It’s not an act, Serena. It’s strategy. And soon, once the final merger papers go through next week, we won't need to hide behind strategy anymore. Amelia will be a footnote. A quiet settlement, a signed NDA, and she’ll disappear back into the background she came from.”

“And the board?” Serena asked, her eyes narrowing slightly with calculating ambition. “Does anyone suspect the recent asset transfers to the Cayman accounts?”

“Who’s going to suspect?” Grant laughed softly, clink his glass against hers. “The board answers to me. The CFO is in my pocket. And Amelia... Amelia has spent seven years hiding in that penthouse, too timid to look at a balance sheet. She doesn't even know what a proxy vote is.”

Across the room, the ballroom doors swung open to admit a late-arriving senator, but Grant didn't notice. He was too busy basking in the intoxicating warmth of absolute power, completely unaware that the foundation beneath his feet had already turned to dust.
