Chapter 5 - The Descent into the Ballroom

It was 9:45 PM when the private security detail arrived at the Plaza Hotel.
The red carpet outside the entrance was crowded with paparazzi flashing cameras at arriving movie stars, politicians, and tech titans. A sleek, matte-black bulletproof Maybach pulled up to the curb.
The flashbulbs flared instantly, assuming another VIP had arrived.
The rear door opened. A slender, high-heeled shoe in black patent leather touched the red carpet. Then came the sweep of heavy midnight-black velvet.
Amelia Whitaker Mercer stepped out into the glare of the flashbulbs.
For three seconds, the photographers stopped shooting. The reporters holding microphones lowered them in sheer, stunned disbelief.
Rumors had swirled for years about Grant Mercer’s reclusive wife—that she was sickly, unpresentable, unstable, or hidden away because she lacked the sophistication for high society. But the woman standing before them now looked like a queen stepping onto a battlefield to reclaim her throne. Her posture was iron-straight, her face sculpted perfection, her slate-gray eyes burning with an icy, terrifying authority.
Flanked by two towering security guards in immaculate suits, Amelia did not pause for interviews. She walked past the velvet ropes with the effortless, crushing grace of aristocracy.
Inside the Grand Ballroom, the string quartet was playing a soft Mozart waltz.
Grant Mercer was standing near the stage, laughing at a joke told by the senior partner of a major venture capital firm, his hand resting casually on Serena’s bare shoulder.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.
The music didn't stop immediately, but the conversations did. A wave of silence rippled outward from the entrance like a stone dropping into still water, sweeping across the tables until every single person in the room turned to look.
Grant stopped laughing. He turned his head toward the entrance, expecting a late-arriving dignitary.
Instead, he saw his wife.
The glass of champagne in Grant’s hand tilted, a few drops spilling over the rim onto his tailored tuxedo trousers. His breath hitched in his throat.
Amelia? his mind screamed. How is she here? I locked her in the penthouse!
Serena followed his gaze, her triumphant smile vanishing instantly, replaced by a sharp, jittery panic as she recognized the woman walking down the center aisle.
Amelia didn't look at the tables on her left or right. She didn't acknowledge the gasps, the whispers, or the frozen stares of New York’s elite. Her eyes were fixed entirely on the stage, where Grant stood paralyzed under the golden chandeliers.

As she drew closer, the black mink coat fell open, revealing the architectural black velvet gown and the blazing diamonds at her throat.
She didn't look like a victim. She looked like an executioner.
