Chapter 8 - The Two-Million-Dollar Vault

Eleanor walked up the steps to the podium with the practiced grace of a queen ascending her throne. She smiled warmly at the crowd, accepting the microphone from the startled master of ceremonies with a polite nod.
"Thank you, David, for that kind introduction," Eleanor’s voice boomed softly through the surround-sound speakers, carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "As a lifelong patron of architectural preservation and urban development, it is a profound honor to be here in Columbus tonight. But before we celebrate this wonderful firm's achievements, I must address a matter of urgent personal and legal business regarding the future of the Callahan family estate."
I felt my blood run cold. I looked at Preston, whose jaw was clenched so hard I thought his teeth might shatter.
"Step away from me, Caroline," Preston muttered, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated rage. "She's going to try to detonate everything."
"As many of you in the corporate and legal sectors know," Eleanor continued, her voice dripping with practiced, venomous sweetness, "my late husband Richard Callahan established a multi-million-dollar family trust designed to benefit direct, legitimate heirs of our bloodline. Recently, certain fraudulent claims have been brought to my attention—claims suggesting that unauthorized individuals are attempting to siphon funds from this trust under false pretenses of paternity."
Gasps rippled through the audience. Reporters from the local business journal sitting near the front tables immediately whipped out their notepads.
"I want to make it unequivocally clear," Eleanor raised her voice, looking directly out across the sea of tuxedoed guests, her eyes zeroing in on our exact location near the back. "Any attempt to manufacture biological heirs to extort Callahan Enterprises will be met with immediate, devastating legal prosecution. Whitmore Design, and its principal owner Caroline Whitmore, are currently under active investigation for—"
"That is a lie!"
Preston’s roar cut through the ballroom like a thunderclap, instantly silencing Eleanor mid-sentence.
Every head in the room whipped around as Preston shoved his way past a row of tables, marching straight down the central aisle toward the stage, his eyes blazing with fury.
"Preston..." Eleanor stammered for the first time in her life, her microphone picking up her sudden stumble as she stared down at her son in utter shock. "What are you doing? Get off the stage."
"You lying, manipulative hypocrite!" Preston shouted, taking the steps two at a time until he stood right beside his mother at the podium. He snatched the microphone right out of her trembling hand, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "There is no fraud! There are no fake claims! Five years ago, you forced Caroline out of my life with a payoff envelope while I was grieving my father! And now, because you're terrified of losing control of the two-million-dollar grandfather trust that legally belongs to my sons, you're trying to destroy an innocent woman's reputation on a public stage!"
The ballroom erupted into absolute, deafening chaos.

Cameras flashed from every direction. Reporters shouted questions over one another. Whispers, gasps, and scandalized murmurs bounced off the walls.
Eleanor stood frozen beside him, her face completely drained of color, her aristocratic mask finally shattering into a million irreparable pieces.
