Chapter 10 - A Foundation Built to Last

Six months later, the spring sun was warm enough to coax the first tulips out of the soil in our backyard.
Whitmore Design had just won the municipal cultural center contract—not through backroom corporate coercion or Eleanor's dirty money, but through a blind, competitive architectural bid where our design had blown the city planning committee away.
I stood on the back patio holding a blueprint rolled up in my hand, watching Liam and Lucas chase our golden retriever across the emerald-green lawn.
Footsteps crunched softly behind me on the patio pavers.
Two warm arms wrapped gently around my waist, and a familiar chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.
"The structural engineers just signed off on the foundation blueprints for the cultural center," Preston murmured into my ear, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek. "They said it's the most solid, enduring design they've reviewed in a decade."
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart against my back.
"Good," I whispered, turning around in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck. "Because a strong foundation is everything. Whether you're building a bridge, a home, or a family."

Preston smiled, his steel-gray eyes shining with a deep, abiding peace that had taken five years, a mall encounter, and a multi-million-dollar war to finally earn. He leaned down, and his lips met mine in a gentle, lingering kiss beneath the open spring sky.
Inside the house, the twins laughed as they ran inside to grab their snacks, their bright voices echoing through the open kitchen windows. The past was behind us, buried beneath the ruins of a broken empire, while our future stretched out before us—wide, beautiful, and built to last.
