Tears filled Ethan's eyes.
He slowly knelt in front of Lily.
His voice barely came out.
"What did you say?"
The little girl hugged her teddy bear tighter.
"Mommy says my daddy is kind."
She smiled.
"And she says he has sad eyes."
Ethan broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
A tear slipped down his face.
Olivia had spent four years protecting him in Lily's heart.
Never poisoning the child against him.
Never telling her that he had disappeared.
Never telling her she had cried herself to sleep hundreds of nights.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Olivia's own tears finally escaped.
"I tried."
She walked toward him.
"I searched everywhere."
"I wrote letters."
"I called."
"I begged."
"But you were gone."
Ethan stared in disbelief.
Then Victoria spoke softly.
"Father knew."
Ethan turned.
"What?"
Victoria nodded.
"He intercepted every letter."
"He wanted Olivia out of the family."
"He never told you."
The room fell silent.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The anger.
The separation.
The lost years.
All because of lies.
Ethan looked at Lily again.
Four birthdays.
Four Christmas mornings.
Four years of bedtime stories.
Gone.
He would never get those moments back.
Slowly, he reached out his hand.
Lily looked at him curiously.
Then placed her tiny hand into his.
And smiled.
"Mommy said you'd come one day."
Ethan closed his eyes.
A broken laugh escaped his lips.
"You waited for me?"
The little girl nodded.
"Forever."
He wrapped his arms around her carefully.
And for the first time in four years—
Ethan Ashcroft held his daughter.
Olivia stood nearby, tears streaming silently.
Victoria cried openly.
Even Marcus looked away to hide his emotions.
Outside, the evening sky darkened.
