Chapter 3 - Into the Lion's Den

The sleek black SUV glided through the iron gates of the Vance estate just after midnight. High stone walls, security cameras, and armed guards swarmed the perimeter. It was a fortress disguised as a luxury mansion.
I sat in the back seat with Ellie sleeping in her car seat beside me. Julian sat in the front passenger seat, silent and motionless, looking out into the dark trees.
"Why my husband?" I whispered, breaking the silence that had heavy-laden the entire ride. "David was an accountant at a small logistics firm. He didn't know people like you. He didn't gamble, he didn't take risks."
Julian turned his head slightly. "David worked for a shell company owned by the Moretti family. Three weeks before he died, he found an irregularity in their books—a transfer tracking human trafficking payments. He tried to blow the whistle."
My blood ran cold. David hadn't died from a distracted driver. He had been murdered because he tried to do the right thing.
"The Morettis realized last week that David made a duplicate drive of those files," Julian continued, his voice emotionless. "They believe he hid it at your apartment. They were planning to burn your building down tomorrow night to clear the paper trail."
A cold sweat broke out across my neck. I looked down at Ellie’s innocent face, absolute terror clutching my throat. If Julian hadn't caught me hiding her in that closet, Ellie and I would have been inside that apartment when it burned.
The SUV stopped in front of a sprawling marble courtyard. Julian opened my door and held out his hand. Hesitantly, I placed my palm in his. His grip was warm, solid, and surprisingly reassuring.
Inside, the estate was breathtaking, yet devoid of life. A head housekeeper named Mrs. Gable greeted us with a warm smile, immediately guiding me to a lavish suite on the second floor complete with a pre-assembled mahogany crib, plush carpets, and a nursery filled with brand-new clothes and toys.
"Mr. Vance had us prepare this the moment he realized who you were," Mrs. Gable murmured kindly, placing a hand on my shoulder. "You're safe here, dear."
Later that night, after settling Ellie into her crib, I wandered onto the balcony overlooking the rear courtyard. Down below, near a stone fountain, Julian stood alone, a lit cigarette held between his fingers.
As I watched, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small silver pocket watch. He snapped it open, staring at it for a long moment before closing his eyes in quiet agony.
"That belonged to his little sister," a voice spoke from the shadows behind me.
I spun around to see Marcus, Julian’s chief security officer, leaning against the doorframe.
"She was seven months old when the Morettis bombed his father's car," Marcus said softly. "Julian survived. She didn't. When he saw your baby in that closet today, Maya... you gave him something he hasn't had in fifteen years."
May you like
"What?" I asked, my heart aching for the cold man downstairs.
"A reason to fight for someone innocent."
