Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

By the end of my first week at the estate, the quiet routine was almost enough to make me forget the danger lurking outside the gates. My job was simple: oversee the household staff, manage daily schedules, and ensure the estate ran smoothly. But every evening at precisely six o'clock, Julian would return from his downtown office, walk straight up to the nursery, and sit quietly while I fed Ellie.

He rarely spoke, but his presence transformed from intimidating to protective. He learned how to hold her bottle, how to soothe her when she was teething, and how to make her laugh by gently tapping her small yellow rattle. Seeing the feared mafia Don sitting on a plush rug blowing bubbles for a baby girl felt like a dream.

Then the peace shattered on a stormy Thursday afternoon.

I was in Julian's private study inventorying his personal archives when a loose floorboard near the fireplace caught my shoe. Crouching down, I noticed a slight seam in the wood. Pushing it aside revealed a small wall safe, left slightly ajar.

Inside lay a single leather-bound journal and a stack of surveillance photos.

My hands shook as I pulled the photos out. They were pictures of me. Pictures of David from two years ago. Pictures of Ellie leaving the hospital after she was born. But what made my breath hitch was a handwritten note clipped to David’s autopsy report:

Subject eliminated as requested. Secure the key before the widow realizes what he left her.

The handwriting matched the signature on the contract sitting on Julian’s desk.

"You shouldn't be looking through those," a low voice barked from the doorway.

I whirled around, clutching the photos against my chest, my eyes wide with betrayal. Julian stood there, drenched from the rain outside, his expression darker than the storm clouds rolling across the sky.

"You knew!" I screamed, tears blinding my vision. "You didn't just know about David's death—you were involved! Did you order him killed?!"

Julian took two swift strides into the room, snatching the photos from my hand. "Don't be a fool, Maya! Look at the date on the order!"

I stumbled back, my heart hammering. "What?"

"That order was issued by my uncle six months ago, before I took control of the syndicate," Julian growled, stepping closer, his eyes burning with intense frustration. "My uncle was working with the Morettis. The day I found out what he did to your husband, I executed him myself."

Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the sound of thunder crashing outside.

"I didn't bring you here to keep you quiet," Julian whispered, his voice softening as he reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray tear from my cheek. "I brought you here because David died trying to protect you, and I'll be damned if I let them finish what they started."

Before I could answer, the mansion's emergency sirens blared, filling the halls with red flashing lights.

Marcus burst into the study, his weapon drawn. "Boss, we've got a perimeter breach. Main gate just got hit with an RPG. The Morettis are inside."
