Chapter 3 - The Investigation

The fallout began on Monday. My phone was a cacophony of notifications: angry voicemails from Isabella’s mother, passive-aggressive texts from her "best friends," and a formal, cold email from a high-end wedding planner demanding the final payment for the catering that was now going to waste.

I ignored them all. Instead, I spent the day doing something I should have done months ago: I went through my own digital footprint.

I started with the shared cloud drive I had foolishly set up for "wedding planning." I dove into the folders Isabella thought she had deleted. My background in data analysis finally came in handy. I found recovery files, hidden subdirectories, and a treasure trove of correspondence.

There it was—the truth behind the "adults-only" edict. It wasn't just about her sisters' kids. It was about erasing Penelope. There were emails to her bridesmaids referring to my daughter as "the baggage" and "the obstacle." There was even a conversation with an interior designer about "redoing the spare bedroom" to make it a "yoga studio," with a note that read: I’ll deal with the brat’s stuff once the ring is on my finger.

My blood ran cold. This wasn't just a difference of opinion; this was a calculated plan to displace my daughter the moment she became my wife.

I took the evidence to an attorney. Not just any lawyer, but the one who had helped me with my estate planning after my wife died. When I laid the screenshots on his mahogany desk, he didn't look shocked. He looked saddened.

"Lucas," he said, tapping the papers. "You were being set up. This is a classic play for control. She wasn't just after you; she was after the assets, and she viewed your daughter as a legal and social liability."

"How do I protect her?" I asked.

"You stop being passive. You document everything. And you prepare for the smear campaign. Because a woman like this, when stripped of her prize, won’t just walk away. She’ll try to burn the reputation of the man who dared to say no."

He was right. By Wednesday, the rumors started. A mutual friend called me, tentatively asking if it was true that I had "a mental breakdown" at the venue.

"Isabella is very upset, Lucas," the friend whispered. "She’s telling everyone you were aggressive, that you intimidated her, and that you’ve been hiding serious personal issues."

I laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. "Let her talk. I have the receipts."
