Chapter 5 - The Turning Point

The standoff with Katherine had been a spark, but the forest fire was already spreading. By the time I returned home, my attorney had received a formal "cease and desist" letter from Isabella’s legal counsel. She was claiming emotional distress and demanding a significant financial settlement for the "public humiliation" I had caused.
It was an audacious move—a classic bully’s tactic to intimidate me into a quiet, expensive exit.
"She’s betting you’re too proud or too scared to go to court," my lawyer, Marcus, explained over the phone. "She thinks that if she hits you with enough legal paperwork, you’ll write a check just to make her disappear."
"What’s her angle on the 'emotional distress'?" I asked, pacing the length of my home office.
"She’s positioning herself as the victim of a volatile, grief-stricken man who had a mental snap," Marcus said. "She’s even managed to get one of your former business partners to submit a character statement claiming you’ve been 'unstable' since your wife’s passing."
I sat down, the weight of the betrayal settling into my bones. This wasn't just a breakup anymore; it was an attempt to dismantle my life. I looked out the window to see Penelope in the backyard, practicing her soccer kicks against the net. She looked so small, so unaware of the vultures circling our home.
"Marcus," I said, my voice hardening, "I want to file a countersuit for defamation and harassment. And I want to subpoena the records from that estate. I want to know who funded that ‘adults-only’ wedding."
"That’s a bold move, Lucas. It will bring everything into the public eye."
May you like
"Everything is already in the public eye," I replied. "It’s time we showed them what's actually underneath the surface."
That evening, I sat Penelope down. I didn't hide the gravity of the situation. I told her we were being sued, and that things might get uncomfortable. She looked at me, her expression far more mature than her thirteen years. "Dad," she said quietly, "she tried to erase me. You don't have to protect me from the truth. I’m ready to fight."
