Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

By the end of the week, my personal bank accounts were completely zeroed out. Every credit card I owned had been declined. My luxury car—leased through the corporate entity—had been repossessed from the parking garage of the extended-stay motel where I was now forced to sleep.

I was broke, unemployed, under federal investigation, and legally barred from seeing my wife or my son.

Desperation had reduced me to a hollow shell of a man. I spent my days pacing the cramped motel room, smoking cigarette after cigarette, my phone constantly glued to my hand, waiting for a miracle that would never come.

On Friday afternoon, my phone finally rang. It wasn't Marcus. It wasn't a bill collector.

It was an unknown number.

"Hello?" I answered eagerly, my voice raspy.

"Julian Carter?" a calm, professional female voice asked.

"Yes! Yes, this is me."

"This is Attorney Rebecca Vance—legal counsel for Claire Vance," the voice stated clearly. "My client has authorized a final settlement offer before we proceed with the immediate filing of formal criminal charges for grand larceny and wire fraud, alongside expedited divorce and full custody proceedings."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "A settlement? What kind of settlement?"

"Mrs. Vance is prepared to offer you a way out," Rebecca said smoothly. "If you sign the enclosed quitclaim deed relinquishing all rights to the Greenwich property, sign a full waiver of marital property division, agree to a permanent, unsupervised custody arrangement granting sole legal and physical custody of Noah to Claire, and submit to a voluntary consent decree barring you from any future contact with my client or your son..."

I stopped breathing. "What? No. You're asking me to give up my son forever? I won't do it! I want joint custody! I want a trial!"

"If you choose a trial, Mr. Carter," Rebecca interrupted, her tone dropping any pretense of warmth, "the federal prosecutor has indicated they will seek a maximum sentence of twelve years in federal prison for corporate embezzlement and wire fraud. The evidence provided by my client is so comprehensive that your defense team has already advised you off-the-record that conviction is a mathematical certainty."

Silence stretched across the phone line. Heavy, suffocating, absolute silence.

"You have twenty-four hours to sign the documents," Rebecca continued. "A courier will drop them off at the front desk of your motel within the hour. If they are not signed, notarized, and returned by tomorrow at noon, the federal indictment will be unsealed, and you will spend the next decade of your life behind bars."

"Wait—please—let me just talk to Claire," I begged, tears streaming down my cheeks. "Just five minutes. Please."

May you like

"Claire doesn't have anything left to say to you, Mr. Carter," Rebecca replied coldly. "You had your chance to protect your family. You chose differently."

The line clicked dead.
