Chapter 8 - The Price of Arrogance

The next morning, exactly at 11:45 AM, the front desk clerk of the motel knocked on my door and handed me a thick manila envelope.
I took it back inside, my hands shaking so violently I could barely tear open the clasp.
Inside were the documents. The quitclaim deed. The financial waiver. The custody surrender agreement.
At the very bottom was a single sheet of paper with a handwritten note from Claire, penned in the familiar, elegant script I used to admire before I threw it all away.

I stared at the signature for a long, agonizing minute.
I looked around the squalid, depressing motel room—the peeling wallpaper, the buzzing fluorescent light, the empty cardboard box of my former life. I thought of the luxury hotel suites, the expensive dinners, the fleeting thrill of an affair that had promised everything and delivered nothing.
