Chapter 5 - The Boardroom and the Backyard

By Wednesday, the contrast between Julian’s two worlds had reached a boiling point.
At 10:00 AM, Julian sat at the head of a twenty-foot glass conference table on the forty-fifth floor of Moretti Tower in Manhattan. Twelve senior executives sat around him in dead silence as Julian tore apart a hundred-million-dollar acquisition proposal with ruthless, surgical precision.
“This financial projection is trash,” Julian said coldly, throwing the dossier onto the table. “Redo it by Friday, or find another firm to work for.”
As the trembling executives scrambled out of the boardroom, Julian’s phone buzzed in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a message from his chief of staff about the Tokyo shipping routes.
Instead, it was a photo text from Emma.
The image showed Leo, Lucas, and Liam wearing cardboard pirate hats, sitting in a makeshift pirate ship built out of sofa cushions in the middle of the estate living room. Sitting right in the center, wearing a massive pirate eye patch and holding a plastic sword, was Emma, grinning widely.
At the bottom, she had typed: Captain Emma and the Three Terrorists demand immediate reinforcements (specifically, chocolate chip cookies).
A slow, undeniable smile spread across Julian’s stern face.
His chief of staff, Marcus Vance, walked back into the conference room holding a fresh stack of contracts. “Julian, about the Asian logistics merger—we need your signature before noon.”
Julian looked at the papers, then looked at his phone screen.
“Cancel the afternoon meetings, Marcus,” Julian said casually, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket.

Marcus blinked in astonishment. “Cancel? Julian, this is the biggest deal of the quarter! Where are you going?”
“Home,” Julian replied, grabbing his briefcase. “My crew needs reinforcements.”
