Chapter 3 - The Trial of Shadows

The courtroom was cold, smelling of stale coffee and judgmental silence. Allison had transformed herself for the trial. She wore muted colors, her hair pulled back in a demure bun, playing the part of a misunderstood socialite.
But when the video footage from the home security system was projected onto the large screen, the facade crumbled. The courtroom gasped. The audio was crystal clear: Allison’s cruel taunts, the thud of the spoon, the sound of his mother’s whimpers.
Ryder sat in the front row, his jaw tight. He watched Allison’s face. She didn't look at the screen. She looked at him, her eyes burning with a venomous hatred. She knew her life of luxury was gone.
The most difficult moment was when Jade was called to the stand. She was small, quiet, and clearly nervous, but she held her head high. She recounted the months of abuse, the systematic isolation Allison had subjected his mother to, and the night she finally decided to risk her own safety to intervene.
“Did you ever consider quitting?” the defense attorney asked, trying to undermine her testimony.
“Every day,” Jade answered, her voice steady. “But if I had left, who would have protected her?”

A hush fell over the room. Ryder felt a surge of pride so sharp it almost brought him to tears. He realized that during his time in Saudi Arabia, he had been chasing wealth, while the greatest treasure—loyalty and human compassion—had been in his own home all along, being mistreated by the person he thought he loved.
The judge’s gavel fell, and for the first time in months, the weight on Ryder’s chest lightened. The legal battle was just beginning, but the truth was out. There was no going back to the life he had built; he had to build a new one, and he knew now that he wouldn't be doing it alone.
