Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Even with the verdict finalized, the shadow of what had happened continued to drift through the hallways of the estate. Ryder found himself awake at 3:00 AM, pacing the library, haunted by the "what ifs." He felt the crushing weight of survivor’s guilt. He had been thousands of miles away, working to secure a future, while his mother was suffering a living hell in the very home he had provided.

One night, he found Jade in the library, holding a book he had been reading. She didn't startle when he entered; she seemed to have been expecting him.

"You're doing it again," she said softly. "You're trying to carry the whole world on your shoulders. You think that because you weren't here, you're the one to blame."

Ryder slumped into a chair, rubbing his face with his hands. "I was a fool, Jade. I gave her everything, and she used it to tear down the only people who actually loved me."

Jade walked over and knelt beside his chair, taking his hands in hers. "Ryder, look at me. You didn't cause the darkness; you were the one who brought the light. You are the one who stopped it. Don't let your regret rewrite the story. If you hadn't come home when you did, I don't know what would have happened. But you did. And that is what matters."

In that moment, the barriers of status and past roles completely dissolved. Ryder looked at her—not as the woman he hired, but as the woman who had saved him from his own despair. He realized that his grief was a tether, and Jade was the one holding the line, keeping him from drifting away. He leaned his forehead against hers, and for the first time, he let himself cry. It was the final purge of the trauma, and as he held her, he felt the heavy mantle of guilt finally begin to lift.
