Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirror

I walked through the door at 5:00 p.m. The air in the apartment was heavy, but I felt a strange sense of detachment. I had the truth, and for the first time in weeks, I was in control.

Mark was in the living room, reading. Martha was in the kitchen, humming a tune. Lily was in her room, likely hiding.

"Mark," I said. My voice was calm, which seemed to startle him. He looked up, his brow furrowed.

"Elena? You're home early".

"We need to talk. In the bedroom. Now".

Martha poked her head out of the kitchen, her face a mask of faux concern. "Is everything alright, dear? You look quite pale".

"Stay out of this, Martha," I said, my voice cutting through the air like a knife.

Mark stood up, sensing the shift in the atmosphere. He followed me into the bedroom, closing the door behind him. "Elena, what is this about? You're scaring me".

I didn't speak. I simply pulled out my tablet, opened the video file, and hit play.

The screen showed the room in high definition. The audio was crisp—the sound of Martha’s cruelty echoing off the walls. Mark’s face went through a transformation. He went from confused, to angry, to horrified. He watched as his mother threatened our daughter, as she dangled the stolen bracelet, as she systematically dismantled his daughter’s sense of safety.

"No," he whispered. "No, that’s... that’s not her".

"Watch," I said. "Watch the whole thing, Mark. Watch the woman you’ve been choosing over your family. Watch what she does to the child you claim to love".

He sat down on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands. He watched it all. When the video finally ended, the silence in the room was deafening. He looked up at me, his eyes wet. The mask of the 'dutiful son' had shattered, leaving behind only the broken pieces of a man who realized he had been played.

"I didn't know," he sobbed. "I thought... I thought you were just stressed. I thought she was helping".

"You chose not to know," I corrected him. "You chose to believe the person who made you feel comfortable over the person who was actually struggling. You allowed her to abuse Lily because it was easier than standing up to your mother".

He reached for my hand, but I pulled away. The damage was too deep. The trust was gone. He had looked at the evidence of his daughter’s suffering and still hesitated. That, I knew, was a mistake that would never be fully forgiven.
