Chapter 5 - The Departure

The finality of that night hung over the apartment like a shroud. Mark spent hours in the living room, staring at the blank screen of the tablet, while I packed. I didn’t pack for a vacation; I packed for a new life. Clothes, toys, essential documents—everything that belonged to Lily and me was placed into suitcases with a methodical, cold precision.
Martha attempted to intervene, of course. She pounded on the bedroom door, her voice oscillating between saccharine pleas and shrill accusations. "Elena! Don't be dramatic! It’s a misunderstanding! Mark, tell her!"
But Mark stayed silent. He sat on the floor, his back against the hallway wall, a broken man listening to the sound of his marriage being dismantled. When I finally emerged, dragging the last of our bags, he didn't try to stop me. He looked at me with eyes that were hollowed out by the weight of his own realization.
"I need to leave, Mark," I said, my voice steady, stripped of the anger that had fueled me for days. "I cannot build a life on the foundation of your mother’s toxicity and your silence."
"I'll go," he whispered, looking at the floor. "I'll make her leave. I'll fix this."
May you like
"It’s too late for 'fixing'," I replied. "The damage isn't just in this apartment. It’s in Lily. And I have to be the one to heal that."
I walked out the door with Lily, who held my hand tightly, sensing the shift in the air. As the elevator doors closed, I didn't look back. I didn't care about the apartment, the shared history, or the apologies that were already forming on Mark's lips. I was leaving behind the girl who sought permission to be happy and walking into a future where I was the only gatekeeper of our safety.
