Chapter 6 - Reckoning at the Estate

By 10:00 AM, the medical examination was complete.
The pediatric forensic report was devastating. Dr. Aris documented defensive bruising on Maya’s forearms, severe stress-induced weight loss, early signs of nutritional deficiency, and clear psychological markers of prolonged trauma. Toby’s records showed mild developmental delays directly linked to being left unattended for extended periods in his crib.
Armed with the medical reports, the cloud footage, and the offshore financial trails, Attorney Vance secured an emergency ex-parte order of protection and an immediate warrant for Isla’s arrest signed by a duty judge within two hours.
At 11:30 AM, three unmarked police cruisers and my SUV pulled back up the long, winding driveway of the estate.
The house looked serene from the outside, surrounded by manicured lawns and falling red autumn leaves. But inside, the trap was about to spring.
I walked through the front door alone, leaving Julian, Detective Miller, and two uniformed officers waiting just outside the entryway.
Isla was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking green tea and reading a magazine on her tablet. She looked up when I entered, her eyebrows arching with smooth, passive-aggressive irritation.
"Where have you been, Gideon?" she asked, setting her tea down with a soft click. "You took the children out without telling me. Maya missed her morning online tutoring session. You are completely disrupting her routine."
I didn't answer. I walked over to the kitchen table, pulled out a chair, and sat down opposite her.
"The routine is over, Isla," I said quietly.
She frowned, setting her tablet aside. "What on earth are you talking about? Are you still carrying on about last night? I told you, I was simply disciplining your daughter—"
"I didn't go to sleep last night, Isla," I interrupted, staring straight into her eyes. "I sat in my office. And I watched the cloud cameras."
The color drained from her face so fast it was like watching a ghost materialize. Her hands froze over the table, her fingers twitching slightly.
"What... what cameras?" she stammered, her voice losing its polished composure for the first time.
"The ones hidden in the smoke detectors," I replied calmly. "The ones that caught you Yankee-pulling Maya by her wrist. The ones that recorded her screaming inside the dark pantry for forty-five minutes while you drank wine on the couch. The ones that captured you leaving my baby son crying in his own waste while you browsed clothing online."
Isla’s eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an escape, a lie, a defense. But there was nowhere to run.
"Gideon... listen to me," she began, her tone shifting instantly into a desperate, breathy plea as she reached across the table to touch my hand. "You don't understand how hard it’s been while you're away! Maya is difficult! She lies, she acts out, she hates me! I was only trying to be a good mother to your children—"
"Don't you dare speak her name," I growled, pulling my hand away as if her skin were venomous. "I know about the Cayman accounts, Isla. I know about the attorney in New York. I know about your plan to declare my daughter insane so you could take my money."
Isla’s posture shattered completely. The gentle, loving wife vanished entirely, replaced by a ugly, sneering mask of pure hatred.
"You think you're so smart, don't you?" she spat, leaning forward, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous rasp. "You think anyone will take your word over mine? I'm her stepmother! I've been taking care of this house while you're out making millions! I'll tell the court you were abusive! I'll tell them you forced me to keep her in check!"
"You can tell that to the judge," I said softly.

I raised my hand and clapped twice.
The kitchen door flew open, and Detective Miller stepped inside with two uniformed officers, their handcuffs gleaming under the bright kitchen lights.
