Chapter 7 - The Legal Siege

"Isla Vance, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, unlawful restraint, and corporate fraud," Detective Miller announced, stepping forward with absolute authority.

Isla shrieked, kicking her chair back as she tried to bolt toward the dining room. But the two uniformed officers moved swiftly, catching her arms, pinning her against the white quartz countertop, and pulling her wrists behind her back with a sharp, metallic click of the cuffs.

"Get your hands off me!" she screamed, her hair falling wildly into her face, her pristine silk top tearing against the edge of the counter. "Gideon! Tell them to stop! You can't do this to me! Do you know who my family is?!"

"I know exactly who you are," I said, standing up and looking down at her as she wriggled helplessly in the officers' grip. "You're a predator. And your lease on my life just expired."

They dragged her out through the front entrance, her high heels dragging against the marble floor, her hysterics echoing across the empty neighborhood. I stood on the porch, watching as she was shoved into the back of the police cruiser, the red and blue emergency lights flashing against the cold rain.

Julian walked up beside me, handing me a fresh cup of coffee.

"That’s step one," Julian said grimly. "Now comes the hard part. Her legal team is going to fight dirty. They’ll try to suppress the video evidence claiming invasion of privacy."

"Let them try," Attorney Vance chimed in, walking up behind us with her briefcase. "The home was sole-property of Gideon prior to the marriage, and the cameras were installed for home security purposes under his sole ownership. Legally, the footage is entirely admissible. Furthermore, the financial records we pulled from the Cayman accounts give us leverage for immediate asset freezing."

"I don't care about the money," I said, my gaze fixed on the empty driveway where the police car had disappeared. "I just want her completely wiped from my children's lives. Permanently."

"We file for sole emergency custody and an immediate annulment based on fraud tomorrow morning," Vance stated firmly. "She won't get a single dime. And with Miller’s charges, she won't see the outside of a state facility for a very long time."

That evening, I brought Maya and Toby back home.

The house felt terrifyingly quiet, but for the first time in years, the air didn't feel heavy with unseen tension. I spent hours cleaning the kitchen, throwing away every item Isla had touched, stripping her clothes from the master closet, and burning her personal belongings in the outdoor fire pit until nothing was left but ash.

When I went upstairs to check on Maya, she was sitting on her rug, building a tall wooden block tower with Toby.

She looked up at me as I walked into the room, her small eyes scanning my face carefully.

"Is she coming back, Daddy?" Maya asked quietly, holding a yellow block in her hands.

I knelt down beside her, putting my arms around both of my children.

"No, Maya," I said, looking her dead in the eye with absolute certainty. "She is never, ever coming back. This is our home now. Just us. And nobody will ever put you in the dark again."

May you like

Maya didn't cry. She simply let out a long, deep breath, laid her head against my chest, and whispered two words that broke my heart into a thousand pieces:

"I'm safe."
