Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The Penobscot County Courthouse was bustling on Wednesday morning.

Ethan arrived dressed in a tailored navy suit, walking arm-in-arm with Vanessa. She wore an ivory maternity dress designed to accentuate a slight bump, her bright red lipstick matching the oversized designer sunglasses perched on her head. They walked into the hallway with an air of absolute arrogance, flanked by a high-priced local defense attorney named Richard Sterling.

When Ethan spotted me sitting on the wooden bench outside Courtroom 3, accompanied only by Julian Garrison, his lip curled into a sneer. He walked over, leaving Vanessa a few feet back.

“You still have time to settle this quietly, Sarah,” Ethan said, lowering his voice so the hallway bailiffs couldn’t hear. “Sign over full custody, give up your claim to the house, and I’ll tell Sterling to drop the assault charges. You’re a federal agent; a domestic violence record will strip your security clearance instantly.”

I looked up at him. The man I had loved for seven years looked like a total stranger—hollow, desperate, and pathetic.

“Is that your final offer, Ethan?” I asked calmly.

“It’s your only option,” he snapped. “Vanessa and I are building a real family now. A son. You chose your stupid federal border job over us. You have nobody to blame but yourself.”

Before I could answer, the bailiff opened the double doors. “Case Number 2026-FA-402. Beckett versus Beckett. All parties enter.”

The courtroom was quiet. Judge Martha Reynolds—a stern, non-nonsense family court judge with twenty years on the bench—sat behind the elevated wooden dais, scanning the preliminary filings.

Sterling, Ethan’s lawyer, stood up first with practiced dramatic flair.

“Your Honor,” Sterling began smoothly. “We are requesting an immediate emergency transfer of primary custody to my client, Mr. Ethan Beckett. The mother, Sarah Beckett, is a federal officer who recently returned from an intense border operation exhibiting clear signs of unprovoked aggression. She stormed into the marital residence, physically assaulted Mr. Beckett’s partner, Ms. Vanessa Lombard, and abducted their young daughter, Emily.”

Sterling pointed toward Vanessa. “Ms. Lombard is currently six months pregnant with Mr. Beckett’s child. The mother’s violent outburst endangered both Ms. Lombard and the unborn infant.”

Judge Reynolds didn’t react. She looked over at our table. “Mr. Garrison, your response?”

Julian Garrison stood up slowly, unbuttoning his suit jacket with complete composure.

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Garrison said softly. “We have just three items to submit for the record before we address the custody petition.”

Garrison walked forward and handed three bound packages to the court clerk.

“Exhibit A,” Garrison announced, his voice echoing clearly through the room. “Certified pediatric medical records and high-resolution forensic photographs from Northern Light Health, taken eight hours after Agent Beckett returned home. They document extensive, multi-week physical abuse inflicted upon five-year-old Emily Beckett—including a deep soft-tissue crushing injury on her right hand matching the exact tread of the red high-heeled shoe Ms. Lombard is currently wearing in this courtroom.”

Vanessa flinched violently, instinctively pulling her feet back under her chair. Ethan’s attorney frowned, looking quickly at his client.

“Exhibit B,” Garrison continued smoothly. “An active federal arrest warrant issued an hour ago by the United States District Court for the District of Maine, charging Ms. Vanessa Lombard—alias Vanessa Vance—with five counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement exceeding four hundred thousand dollars.”

Ethan’s head snapped toward Vanessa, his face instantly draining of color. “What?” he muttered.

“And finally, Exhibit C,” Garrison concluded, turning to face Ethan directly. “Certified medical records obtained via federal subpoena from the State of North Carolina Department of Health, confirming that Ms. Vanessa Lombard underwent a permanent surgical sterilization five years ago. She is not, nor has she ever been, pregnant with Mr. Beckett’s child.”

Silence descended upon the courtroom like a falling safe.

Vanessa jumped out of her chair, her face contorting into a mask of wild panic. “That’s a lie! Those documents are forged!”

“Sit down, ma’am!” Judge Reynolds slammed her gavel down with a thunderous crack. “Bailiffs, secure the room!”

Ethan sat frozen in his chair, staring at Vanessa as if his brain had completely short-circuited. “Vanessa... what is he talking about? You said... you said we were having a son...”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Vanessa screamed at him, completely dropping her soft, victim persona.

Before Ethan could even process the betrayal, the double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open. Two uniformed federal marshals and Special Agent Marcus Brody stepped inside, their badges glinting under the fluorescent lights.

“Your Honor,” Agent Brody said firmly. “We are here to execute the federal bench warrant for Vanessa Lombard.”

Judge Reynolds signed the order on her desk without a second’s hesitation. “Remand the defendant into federal custody immediately. As for Mr. Ethan Beckett...”

The judge fixed Ethan with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“Emergency custody of Emily Beckett is granted exclusively to Sarah Beckett. Mr. Beckett is to be removed from the marital home immediately under law enforcement supervision, and a full freeze is hereby placed on all marital assets pending criminal investigation.”

The gavel fell.

Bang.

As the marshals snapped steel handcuffs around Vanessa’s wrists and dragged her screaming out of the courtroom, Ethan slumped forward onto the defense table, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a broken child.

I stood up, buttoned my jacket, and walked past him without saying a single word.
