Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Two weeks after Ethan’s arrest, the ripples of the investigation reached far beyond Maine.

Vanessa Lombard’s interrogation by federal agents revealed that she wasn’t working alone. She was part of a larger, organized white-collar fraud syndicate operating out of Boston and New York, targeting mid-level corporate executives across New England to launder illegal gambling money through local real estate and shipping firms.

Because I was a trained federal investigator, Special Agent Brody formally requested my temporary attachment to the regional task force processing the syndicate’s financial records.

Sitting in the secure intelligence room at the federal building in Bangor, surrounded by glowing monitors and whiteboards covered in flowcharts, I helped track down every single asset Ethan and Vanessa had touched.

“We recovered three hundred thousand of the siphoned escrow funds from a hidden account in New Hampshire,” Brody reported during a morning briefing. “The remaining hundred thousand was spent on luxury goods and lease deposits, which are currently being auctioned off under federal asset forfeiture.”

Julian Garrison, sitting beside me, nodded approvingly. “That means Ethan’s former firm won’t be able to pursue a civil lawsuit against Sarah or the marital estate to recover their losses. The federal asset recovery covers the restitution.”

“What about Vanessa’s criminal ring?” I asked, leaning over a map of financial transfers.

“Her ringleader—a dirty hedge-fund manager out of Manhattan—was arrested at JFK airport trying to board a flight to Dubai last night,” Brody smiled grimly. “Vanessa broke completely under federal interrogation once she realized she was facing thirty years. She signed a full confession detailing her entire operation—including how she deliberately targeted Ethan because he was weak, insecure, and easy to manipulate while you were away on deployment.”

Brody handed me a copy of Vanessa’s signed deposition.

I flipped to the section detailing her treatment of Emily. Vanessa had admitted in black-and-white print that she had physically abused Emily out of pure resentment because the little girl kept calling out for me, refusing to acknowledge Vanessa as her new ‘mother.’

Reading those words made my heart ache, but it also solidified the total legal destruction of our perpetrators. With Vanessa’s signed confession and Ethan’s guilty plea on federal fraud charges, both of them were locked into ironclad plea deals that guaranteed long-term federal prison sentences without the possibility of early parole.

The legal nightmare was over. The bad actors were behind bars.

Now, the only battle left that mattered was helping my daughter find her voice again.
