Chapter 7 - Stripping the Empire

While Linda and Ashley sat in separate holding cells at the Franklin County Corrections Center awaiting their formal arraignment, I spent the next forty-eight hours dismantling every single financial, legal, and personal tie that connected my life to theirs.
For five years, out of a misplaced sense of filial duty, I had been paying the $1,400 monthly rent on my mother’s two-bedroom apartment in Upper Arlington. I was also the primary account holder for Ashley’s leased vehicle and held a co-signed credit line that allowed them to live far beyond their means.
By 9:00 a.m. on Friday, sitting in Arthur Vance’s high-rise legal office in downtown Columbus, we filed the emergency revocations.
“Ethan,” Mr. Vance said, reviewing the pile of documents before him. “Because your name is the sole primary on your mother’s apartment lease, we have executed an immediate 24-hour lease surrender. The landlord has already cleared her belongings into a private storage unit, which will be auctioned off if the storage fees aren't met next month.”
“And the car?” I asked.
“Ashley’s 2024 sedan was repossessed from the precinct parking lot two hours ago,” Mr. Vance replied with a professional nod. “Furthermore, we filed emergency freezes on every bank account bearing your mother’s name. The $17,000 they stole from your savings has been clawed back under federal emergency fraud protocols.”
While the legal hammer fell on their finances, the story exploded across local news outlets.
The news headline on the Columbus Dispatch home page read:
COLUMBUS MOTHER AND DAUGHTER ARRESTED IN HORRIFIC NEWBORN POISONING & INFANT NEGLECT CASE; SECURITY CAM FOOTAGE EXPOSES PREMEDITATED PLOT
Ashley, who had spent years cultivating an online image as a glamorous "lifestyle influencer" and "loving aunt" on Instagram and TikTok, woke up in her jail cell to find her social media accounts inundated with tens of thousands of disgusted comments.
Her brand sponsors dropped her within hours. Local news channels broadcasted the horrific living room security footage across the state, ensuring that neither Linda nor Ashley would ever be able to show their faces in Ohio without being recognized for the monsters they were.
That afternoon, I returned to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
The NICU room was warm, filled with soft light and the gentle hum of monitors.
Emily sat in a rocking chair near the window, wearing a soft lavender robe. Her color was returning, her smile gentle and tearful, holding our little boy against her chest.
Noah was awake. His fever was completely gone. His little blue eyes were open, staring up at his mother’s face while nursing peacefully. His tiny hand reached out, grabbing Emily’s finger with a firm, surprisingly strong grip.
I walked in silently, sitting down on the stool beside them and wrapping my arms around both of them.

“He’s strong, Ethan,” Emily whispered, resting her head against my cheek. “He fought through it.”
“We all did,” I said, kissing Noah’s soft forehead, feeling the healthy, miraculous warmth of his skin. “And nobody is ever going to hurt either of you again. I swear it on my life.”
