Chapter 8 - The Sentencing of the Abusers

Six months later. June 2026.

The Franklin County Court of Common Pleas was packed to capacity. Journalists, community members, and family law advocates filled every pew in the gallery.

Sitting at the defense table in bright orange jail jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists, were Linda and Ashley Miller.

Without her designer clothes, hair styling, and expensive makeup, Ashley looked small, gaunt, and terrified. Linda sat stooped in her chair, her graying hair unkempt, staring down at the wooden table with a bitter, hateful scowl. Their high-priced public defenders looked exhausted after six months of trying to defend a case caught entirely on 4K video.

Judge Patricia Thorne sat on the bench, reviewing the thick stack of victim impact statements and medical reports.

“We will now hear the final statement from the victim,” Judge Thorne declared, her voice ringing clear throughout the courtroom.

I stood up from the prosecutor’s table.

I was wearing a charcoal suit, my posture straight, holding a single piece of paper in my hand. Beside me sat Emily, holding seven-month-old Noah—who was now a thriving, chubby, laughing baby boy with bright blue eyes and full cheeks.

I stepped up to the podium, looking directly into the eyes of the woman who gave me life, and the sister I had raised.

“Six months ago,” I began, my voice clear and steady, “I believed that blood was a bond that could never be broken. I believed that calling someone ‘mother’ meant they would protect your children with their life.”

Linda flinched slightly, but kept her eyes glued to the floor.

“You chose cruelty,” I continued, staring straight at Linda. “You chose greed. You chose to let an innocent woman bleed on a floor and a seven-day-old baby burn with fever so you could feel powerful. You didn't just break the law; you destroyed every right you had to be called my family.”

I turned my gaze to Ashley.

“You threw away your youth, your future, and your humanity for a few thousand dollars and a night of luxury. You will spend the best years of your life looking at concrete walls, remembering the choice you made.”

I folded my paper and looked up at Judge Thorne.

“Your Honor, my wife and son survived. They are strong, they are safe, and they are loved. I ask for the maximum sentence allowed by law—not out of revenge, but to ensure these predators never harm another child again.”

Judge Thorne nodded slowly. She adjusted her glasses, picked up her wooden gavel, and looked down at the defense table with absolute, icy authority.

“Linda Miller,” Judge Thorne announced, her voice echoing off the high marble walls. “For the charges of attempted murder, felony child endangerment, administration of a toxic substance, and grand larceny, I sentence you to twenty-two years in state custody at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, without the possibility of parole for eighteen years.”

Linda let out a ragged, hysterical gasp, slumping forward against the table as tears broke down her cheeks.

“Ashley Miller,” Judge Thorne continued without hesitation. “For your role as co-conspirator, computer fraud, and felony child abuse, I sentence you to fourteen years in state custody.”

CRACK.

The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, final sound that signaled the absolute end of their freedom.

Guards immediately seized Linda and Ashley by their elbows, pulling them out of their chairs. Ashley began weeping loudly, reaching her cuffed hands toward me.

“Ethan! Please! Forgive me! Ethan!” Ashley sobbed as she was dragged through the side door.

I didn't answer. I didn't move. I simply turned around and walked back to my wife and son.
