Chapter 5 - The Financial Trail

Donald backed away from me, holding both hands up in frantic desperation.
“Madison, I swear to God! I swear on Danielle’s life, I didn’t know!” Donald cried out, tears pouring down his face. “My mother brought those insurance papers to my office three months ago! She told me it was standard family estate protection! She said our wealth manager recommended it because of your mother’s inheritance!”
“And you just signed it?!” I screamed, the pain tearing through my chest like a physical blade. “You signed a five-million-dollar policy on my life without asking me?! Without talking to me?!”
“She told me it was a surprise!” Donald sobbed, falling to his knees on the rug. “She said she was setting up a legacy trust for Danielle! I trusted her, Madison! She’s my mother!”
“Mr. Vance,” Detective Garcia interrupted sternly, stepping between us. “We are going to verify every signature, every email, and every bank transfer between you, your mother, and Agustin Wickham. If we find a single dollar flowing from your personal accounts to Phoenix, you will be arrested for conspiracy to commit capital murder.”
“Check my accounts!” Donald yelled, pulling out his wallet and tossing his phone onto the table. “Check everything! Search my office! Search my car! I didn't know! I would never hurt Madison! I love her!”
Detective Garcia signaled to her officers. “Take Mr. Vance to the precinct for formal questioning and financial verification. Secure his phone and laptop.”
Two officers led a weeping Donald out of the house into the night, leaving me alone in the silent, ruined living room with Detective Garcia and the forensic team.
I sat down in the armchair, wrapping my arms tightly around my chest, shivering despite the warm night air.
“Ms. Vance,” Detective Garcia said gently, sitting across from me. “I know you’re in shock, but we have a critical window of time right now. Agustin Wickham doesn't know that Rachel has been arrested. He thinks the plan is still moving forward.”
I looked up, wiping my cold tears. “What are you saying?”
“According to the camera footage from two nights ago,” Garcia pointed at the screen, “Rachel handed Agustin an envelope. We found five thousand dollars in cash inside Rachel’s bedroom dresser tonight. Agustin was coming back to San Diego tomorrow night to collect the rest of his payment—and to deliver the final, lethal batch of toxin.”
A cold, sharp clarity cut through my grief.
I was done crying. I was done being the sweet, quiet daughter-in-law who served tea and smiled while being destroyed from the inside out.
I looked Detective Garcia straight in the eye.

“What do you need me to do?” I asked.
“We need to use Rachel’s phone,” Detective Garcia smiled—a sharp, cold smile. “And we need you to send a message to Agustin.”
