Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Detective Garcia and a specialized tactical team set up a mobile command station inside my dining room.

Rachel’s confiscated iPhone sat in the center of the table, connected to a digital cloning unit.

With the District Attorney’s approval, Garcia drafted a text message to Agustin Wickham using Rachel’s specific typing style and speech patterns, which we had analyzed from her old text logs.

To: Agustin W.

Message: Madison took a double dose this morning. She is very weak and resting in bed. Bring the rest of the supply tonight at 9 PM. Donald is at work. Everything is going according to plan.

For ten excruciating minutes, no reply came.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. If Agustin suspected anything—if he had seen news reports or tried to call Rachel’s cell directly—the sting operation would fail, and he would disappear into the vast expanse of the Southwest.

Then, the phone buzzed on the glass table.

From: Agustin W.

Message: Good. I have the double concentration. Have the remaining $10,000 ready in cash. I’ll use the garden gate.

Detective Garcia let out a low breath and looked up at her team. “We got him.”

For the next twelve hours, my house was transformed into a fortress. Four undercover officers were positioned inside the garage, two in the master bedroom, and two outside in the side garden bushes.

I stayed in the kitchen, sitting at the table where I had spent ten years drinking poisoned tea.

At 8:45 PM, all the lights in the house were dimmed, except for the single yellow lamp over the kitchen sink—exactly as Rachel kept it every evening.

I sat in the shadowy corner of the living room, hidden behind the heavy silk curtains, holding an emergency panic button connected to Detective Garcia’s headset.

9:00 PM arrived.

The faint sound of gravel crunching came from the side walkway.

Through the sheer curtain, I saw a tall figure shadow past the garden gate. The latch clicked open softly.

The back kitchen door creaked open. Agustin Wickham stepped inside, carrying a black leather duffel bag. He was wearing black jeans, a jacket, and his signature baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.

“Rachel?” Agustin called out in a low, gravelly whisper, stepping into the dim light of the kitchen. “Where are you? I’m here.”

No one answered.

Agustin frowned, taking two steps toward the center of the kitchen. He set the leather duffel bag on the island counter and unzipped it, pulling out a sealed glass bottle containing a thick, milky-white liquid.

“Rachel?” he called out again, his hand going instinctively toward his jacket pocket. “Why is it so dark in here?”

“Because the party is over, Agustin,” I said from the darkness of the living room, stepping out into the lamplight.

Agustin whipped around, his eyes widening in shock as he recognized my face from the photos Rachel had sent him. “You... Madison? What the hell is this? Where is Rachel?!”

“Rachel is in a precinct holding cell,” I said, my voice deadpan and unshakeable. “And you’re surrounded.”

“Police! Don’t move! Hands in the air!”

The garage door burst open! The back patio glass doors shattered inward as four tactical officers rushed into the kitchen with flashlights and drawn sidearms!

Agustin let out a guttural curse, reaching into his coat for a weapon, but two officers tackled him across the kitchen island, slamming him onto the marble floor. The glass bottle of white liquid shattered on the tile, spilling the milky toxin across the floor.

“Get your hands behind your back! Now!” an officer roared, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Agustin’s wrists.

Detective Garcia stepped into the kitchen, pulling the black leather duffel bag away and inspecting its contents. Inside were six more pharmaceutical bottles, two forged medical licenses, and forty thousand dollars in unregistered cash.

Agustin was hauled up onto his feet, his jaw bleeding slightly from the impact with the counter. He glared at me with pure, poisonous hatred.

“You think you’re smart, don’t you?!” Agustin spat at me, spitting blood onto the floor. “Rachel should have doubled the dose months ago! You were supposed to be dead by Christmas!”

I stepped closer to him until I was standing inches from his face. I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.

“Your mother sold you out thirty minutes after she was arrested, Agustin,” I lied smoothly, watching his eyes fill with sudden, terrible betrayal. “She told us everything.”

Agustin’s face twisted into an ugly, furious sneer. “That lying old witch! She came to me! She said you were a rich bitch who deserved to die! She promised me half the insurance money!”

Detective Garcia smiled, recording every word on her body camera. “Thank you for the voluntary confession, Mr. Wickham. Take him away.”
