Chapter 3 - The Cage of Silence

I didn't waste another second arguing with the snakes in my house.
"Gareth!" I shouted at the top of my lungs.
Within five seconds, the heavy mahogany front doors swung open, and Gareth Vance—my head of personal security, a former British Special Boat Service operative who had traveled with me from the airport—stepped into the foyer. He took one look at the wet floor, the bleach bucket, Rachel’s raw hands, and Susan standing pinned against the pillar.
Gareth’s tactical instincts flared instantly. "Boss?"
"Lock down the estate," I ordered, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Confiscate every phone, tablet, and computer belonging to the staff. Nobody leaves this property. If anyone tries to step past the front gate, break their legs."
"Understood, sir," Gareth replied without hesitation, pulling his radio from his belt.
"Michael, you can't do this!" Susan shrieked as Gareth’s men stepped into the hall. "I am an employee of the Dawson Family Trust! Your mother will have you—"
Gareth grabbed Susan by the arm, cutting her off effortlessly, and dragged her toward the study alongside the other two housekeepers. "Save it for the police, lady."
I hurried back to the living room and knelt beside Rachel. I reached into my coat, pulled out a clean silk handkerchief, and gently wiped the sweat and grey dirt from her forehead.
"Rachel... sweetheart," I whispered, my voice breaking as tears finally streamed down my face. "I'm here. It's Michael. You're safe. Nobody is ever going to touch you again."
Rachel opened her eyes slowly. They were bloodshot, surrounded by dark, bruised circles of total exhaustion. She reached out with a trembling hand, her raw, chemical-burned fingers touching my cheek as if checking to see if I were a ghost.
"You're really here?" she choked out.
"I'm here," I promised, pressing a desperate kiss against her knuckles. "I came home early. I came home for you."
"They... they took my phone, Michael," she sobbed, the floodgates finally opening as she buried her face into my chest. "The day after you left for California, your mother came to the house with Susan. She told me you knew everything. She said you agreed that I was a embarrassment to the Dawson name, that I wasn't fit to raise your child."
"No... God, no, Rachel! I never said that! I love you!"
"She said... she said if I tried to leave, or if I called the police, she would use your legal team to declare me mentally unfit and take the baby the moment it was born," Rachel wept, clutching my lapels with frantic strength. "They locked the gates. They didn't let me use the internet. Dr. Vance came every week and gave me injections... he said they were vitamins, but they made me so dizzy, Michael. So tired..."
A dark, lethal shadow crossed my mind. Injections.
"Where is your medical file, Rachel?" I asked urgently.
"In... in Susan's office," she whimpered, her breathing becoming dangerously shallow and rapid. "Michael... my stomach... it hurts."
I looked down at her abdomen. Her shirt was soaked, but it wasn't just sweat or bleach water anymore. A thin, dark trickle of blood was seeping through the fabric around her waist.

Panic, absolute and blinding, hit me like a physical blow.
"Gareth!" I roared, standing up and lifting Rachel back into my arms. "GET THE CAR! NOW!"
