Chapter 6 - The St. Regis Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was a spectacle of blinding opulence. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over high-society elite, billionaire investors, politicians, and socialites dressed in designer gowns and tuxedos.

At the center of it all, standing near a towering ice sculpture of the Dawson Aeronautics crest, was my mother, Evelyn Dawson.

At sixty-five, Evelyn was the picture of regal authority—dressed in a emerald green silk gown, adorned with millions of dollars in heirloom diamonds, sipping champagne while holding court with the city’s most powerful figures. She smiled gracefully, accepting congratulations on the upcoming birth of her grandchild.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a deafening crash.

The ambient classical music cut out as guests gasped and parted like the Red Sea.

I walked down the grand marble steps into the ballroom. I was still wearing my blood-stained dress shirt, my tie loosened, my hair disheveled, and my coat covered in the grime of the hospital floor. Beside me walked Gareth and four heavily armed private security guards.

Evelyn’s smile faltered for a brief second as she spotted me, but she quickly smoothed her expression into one of maternal concern, stepping forward to meet me.

"Michael!" Evelyn exclaimed, her voice loud enough for the surrounding crowd to hear. "Darling, what are you doing here?! We didn't expect you back from California until—"

SLAP.

The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged ballroom like a gunshot.

My palm struck Evelyn’s face with enough force to turn her head completely, snapping her diamond earring from her lobe, which went skittering across the polished floorboards.

The entire room descended into an absolute, horrified silence. Society women gasped, dropping their champagne glasses; men froze in place.

Evelyn stumbled back against a waiter’s tray, her hand flying to her bright red, swelling cheek. Her eyes flared with cold, aristocratic fury.

"Have you lost your mind?!" Evelyn hissed through her teeth, her regal mask dropping instantly. "How dare you strike your mother in public?!"

"You are not my mother," I said, my voice echoing off the gilded walls, loud, clear, and venomous. "You are a sadist. A kidnapper. And a monster."

"Michael, calm down!" she snapped, trying to lower her voice as she noticed fifty smartphones being pulled out by guests to record the scene. "You are hysterical! Whatever lies that peasant girl told you—"

"Rachel is in the Intensive Care Unit!" I roared, stepping into her space, towering over her. "She nearly bled to death three hours ago because you paid my house staff to drug her, abuse her, and force her onto her knees to scrub floors until her skin burned off!"

Gasps tore through the gathered elite. Evelyn turned pale, her eyes darting frantically toward the recording phones.

"That... that is a slanderous lie!" Evelyn stammered, her voice high and desperate. "I was protecting the Dawson family legacy! That girl is a gold-digger from a lower-class background! She was unsuited for our social standing! She was going to ruin you!"

"She didn't ruin me," I said, leaning down until my eyes were inches from hers. "You did."

I gestured to Gareth. He stepped forward and tapped a button on a small remote control connected to the ballroom’s main audiovisual system—the giant screens designed to show the foundation’s annual promotional video.

The screens flashed, and suddenly, Susan Miller’s taped confession from two hours ago played across four massive displays, complete with high-definition audio.

"Mrs. Evelyn Dawson paid me three hundred thousand dollars," Susan’s recorded voice boomed through the ballroom. "She instructed us to strip Rachel of her phone, isolate her, feed her prostaglandin analogs provided by Dr. Vance, and physically break her spirit so we could commit her to an asylum after she gave birth."

Evelyn stared at the screens, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her social empire collapsing around her in real-time.

"It's over, Evelyn," I said, stripping the heavy gold signet ring—the symbol of the Dawson patriarch—from my finger and dropping it into her champagne glass. "You are stripped of your seat on the board of Dawson Aeronautics. Your access to the family trust is revoked. And the police are waiting outside."

At that exact moment, six uniformed officers from the NYPD stepped through the ballroom doors, led by Detective Frank Miller.

"Evelyn Dawson," Detective Miller announced, drawing his handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and felony child endangerment. Hands behind your back."

As the officers cuffed my mother in front of the entire New York high society, she screamed at me, her face contorted in insane rage.

May you like

"You are nothing without me, Michael!" she shrieked as they dragged her away. "You are a Dawson! You will regret this! You will come crawling back!"

I didn't answer. I turned my back on her forever and walked out into the night.
