CHAPTER TWO: Christmas Without Answers

Emily stared at the second photograph.
It had been taken only seconds after the first.
Daniel was still standing in front of the enormous Christmas tree at the Palmer House Hotel.
The same black suit.
The same woman.
But this time, there were several other people in the background.
An elderly couple.
A teenage boy.
A little girl wearing a red velvet dress.
It looked less like a romantic evening and more like some kind of family gathering.
Emily frowned.
Her certainty wavered.
The first photo had seemed undeniable.
The second... left room for questions.
Questions she wasn't ready to ask.
Her phone vibrated again.
Daniel Calling...
She let it ring.
A moment later, another notification appeared.
Voicemail Received
She still couldn't bring herself to listen.
Not yet.
If she heard his voice, she wasn't sure she could stay angry.
And right now, anger felt safer than hope.
The following morning, Christmas Eve arrived under a sky filled with fresh snow.
Mercy General Hospital was quieter than usual, but emergencies never disappeared completely.
Emily tied her hair into a neat ponytail and slipped her engagement ring into the pocket of her white coat instead of wearing it.
Nurse Olivia noticed immediately.
"No ring today?"
Emily forced a smile.
"I didn't sleep much."
Olivia studied her friend's face.
"You okay?"
Emily hesitated.
"Have you ever looked at one picture and suddenly questioned everything you believed?"
Olivia nodded slowly.
"I've learned pictures don't always tell the whole story."
Emily looked away.
"I hope you're right."
Across town, Daniel stood outside the hospital entrance holding a small gift bag.
He had barely slept.
The unopened messages on his phone reminded him that Emily had ignored every call.
He still didn't understand why.
Until Rachel called him early that morning.
"I sent Emily a photo last night."
Daniel's stomach dropped.
"What photo?"
"I saw you at the hotel."
Silence.
Then realization.
"Oh no..."
Rachel continued carefully.
"I thought..."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"You thought she was someone else."
"I'm so sorry."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"You don't understand."
"No."
"You don't understand at all."
He walked into the hospital carrying the gift bag.
Inside was a silver snowflake ornament.
Every Christmas since they started dating, he and Emily had exchanged one ornament to hang on their tree.
It had become their tradition.
He wasn't about to break it now.
The receptionist looked up.
"Can I help you?"
"I'm here to see Dr. Emily Carter."
"I'm sorry."
"She's with patients."
"I'll wait."
Emily spotted him through the glass doors of the waiting area nearly an hour later.
Her heart skipped.
Daniel looked exhausted.
Dark circles framed his eyes.
The neatly groomed confidence he usually carried had disappeared.
Instead, he looked like a man desperately trying to fix something he didn't yet understand.
Olivia quietly stepped beside Emily.
"Is that him?"
Emily nodded.
"Your fiancé?"
She looked down.
"I don't know anymore."
Daniel smiled with relief when he saw Emily approaching.
"Emily."
She stopped several feet away.
"You're busy."
"I'll be quick."
He held out the gift bag.
"Merry Christmas."
She didn't take it.
"I saw the pictures."
His smile faded.
Rachel.
Of course.
He understood immediately.
"I can explain."
Emily folded her arms.
"Can you?"
"Yes."
"Then explain."
Daniel looked around the crowded waiting room.
Families sat nearby.
Children played with holiday coloring books.
An elderly volunteer handed out candy canes.
"Not here."
Emily's voice remained calm.
"Why not?"
"Because this deserves privacy."
"I think what I saw was pretty public."
Several people nearby glanced in their direction.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Please."
Emily looked at him for a long moment.
Then a trauma pager sounded on her belt.
The familiar alarm cut through the silence.
She glanced at the screen.
Multi-vehicle accident. Incoming patients.
Duty came first.
Always.
"I have to go."
Daniel reached out instinctively but stopped before touching her.
"When your shift ends."
"Please."
"I'll wait."
Emily gave no answer.
She turned and disappeared through the emergency doors.
Hours passed.
Daniel remained in the waiting room.
He watched doctors rushing from room to room.
He watched nurses comforting frightened families.
He watched Emily save lives with remarkable calm.
Every time she entered a patient's room, her personal pain disappeared behind quiet professionalism.
It reminded him why he loved her.
She always placed others before herself.
Sometimes...
Too much.
Near midnight, Olivia approached him.
"You're still here."
"I said I'd wait."
She studied him for a moment.
"You really care about her."
Daniel looked surprised.
"I love her."
"Then why does she think otherwise?"
His shoulders dropped.
"I wish I knew."
Finally, Emily stepped into the lobby.
She looked exhausted.
Daniel stood immediately.
"Can we talk?"
She nodded once.
They walked outside beneath softly falling snow.
The city glowed with Christmas lights.
For several moments, neither spoke.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"The woman in the photo..."
Emily looked at him.
"...is not who you think she is."
Emily's heart pounded.
"Then who is she?"
Daniel opened his mouth to answer—
Before he could speak, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
"It's her."
Emily took a slow step backward.
"I think you should answer."
"Emily, wait—"
She shook her head.
"No."
"If she's important enough to call you on Christmas Eve..."
She forced herself to smile.
"...don't keep her waiting."
Daniel watched helplessly as Emily walked back toward the hospital.
He didn't chase her.
Not because he wanted to let her go.
But because he realized that any explanation given now would sound like an excuse.
He answered the phone.
"Hello?"
A frightened female voice came through the speaker.
"Daniel..."
"I need your help."
Emily never heard the rest of the conversation.
Inside the hospital, she leaned against the wall outside the emergency department, trying to steady her breathing.
She had wanted answers.
Instead...
May you like
She had only found more questions.
And somewhere in the city, the truth behind that Christmas photograph was waiting to be discovered.
