CHAPTER THREE: The Woman in the Photograph

Christmas morning arrived beneath a sky the color of silver.

Snow covered the streets of Chicago, muffling the sounds of traffic and leaving the city wrapped in an unusual quiet. Inside Mercy General Hospital, however, the rhythm of medicine continued as it always had.

Patients still arrived.

Monitors still beeped.

Doctors still hurried through the corridors.

Emily had worked through the entire night.

She welcomed the exhaustion.

It left little room to think.

Just after eight o'clock, Nurse Olivia handed her a cup of hot tea.

"You've been awake for almost twenty hours."

Emily accepted it with a tired smile.

"Thanks."

Olivia hesitated before speaking again.

"Can I ask you something?"

Emily nodded.

"If Daniel was really hiding something..."

Olivia chose her words carefully.

"Why would he spend twelve hours sitting in the waiting room just to talk to you?"

Emily stared into her tea.

"I don't know."

"And if he wasn't hiding something..."

Emily sighed.

"I don't know that either."

Across town, Daniel sat in his apartment, staring at a framed engagement photo of him and Emily.

Her smile had always been the first thing he noticed.

It had been the reason he fell in love with her.

Not because it was perfect.

Because it was genuine.

His phone buzzed.

Sophie

He answered immediately.

"How are you?"

There was a pause before she spoke.

"I think I ruined your life."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"No."

"This isn't your fault."

"It kind of is."

"You didn't ask someone to take that picture."

Sophie sighed softly.

"I should've told Emily myself."

"You've never even met her."

"I know."

"But now she thinks..."

Her voice faded.

Daniel finished the sentence.

"...that I'm in love with you."

Neither of them said anything for a moment.

The idea felt absurd.

If only Emily knew the truth.

Twenty-two years earlier...

Daniel's father had disappeared from his family's life.

Only after his father's death six months ago had Daniel learned that he had another daughter from a relationship that existed before Daniel's parents had married.

Her name was Sophie.

She had grown up in another state.

She had never known she had a brother.

Finding her had taken months.

DNA testing had confirmed what old family records only suggested.

They were siblings.

Christmas Eve had been their first meeting.

The hug captured in the photograph had come only moments after Sophie whispered through tears,

"I've always wanted a family."

Daniel had hugged her like a brother.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Unfortunately...

One photograph had frozen that moment forever.

Without the story behind it.

That afternoon, Sophie made a decision.

"I'm going to the hospital."

Daniel looked up.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

"But I want to."

Emily was reviewing patient charts when the receptionist called.

"Doctor?"

"There's someone asking to see you."

"I'm not available."

"She says it's important."

Emily sighed.

"Who is she?"

The receptionist glanced toward the lobby.

"A woman named Sophie."

Emily froze.

Slowly...

She walked toward the front desk.

Standing near the entrance was the same woman from the photograph.

Long chestnut hair.

Kind brown eyes.

A navy winter coat dusted with snow.

She looked nervous.

Very nervous.

"You must be Dr. Carter."

Emily nodded cautiously.

"I'm Emily."

Sophie swallowed.

"I'm sorry to come here."

"I know this isn't appropriate."

"But I think I've accidentally become the reason your life fell apart."

Emily led her into a quiet consultation room.

Neither woman sat down immediately.

Sophie reached into her handbag and carefully removed a folder.

"I brought these."

She slid several documents across the table.

Emily looked down.

The first page was a certified DNA report.

Two names appeared near the top.

Daniel Brooks

Sophia Brooks

Biological Half-Siblings

Emily blinked.

She looked again.

Then at Sophie.

"What is this?"

Sophie smiled sadly.

"I'm Daniel's sister."

Emily stared at her.

"He only found out six months ago."

"I only found out six months ago."

"We spent twenty-two years not knowing each other existed."

Emily slowly sat down.

The room suddenly felt very quiet.

Sophie continued.

"The picture was taken after we met for the first time."

"I was crying."

"So was he."

"He hugged me because..."

Her voice broke.

"...because it was the first time either of us had ever called someone 'brother' or 'sister.'"

Emily couldn't speak.

Sophie reached into the folder once more.

This time she removed a small photo album.

Inside were pictures from Christmas Eve.

Daniel introducing Sophie to an elderly couple.

Children opening presents.

The entire extended family gathered around the Christmas tree.

The moment Rachel's camera had captured was only one second of an evening filled with laughter, tears, and reunions.

Emily closed the album slowly.

"I thought..."

"I know."

Sophie nodded gently.

"I probably would've thought the same thing."

Tears gathered in Emily's eyes.

"I never let him explain."

"He tried."

"He really did."

Emily covered her face with her hands.

"I ended our engagement because of one photograph."

Sophie reached across the table.

"He still loves you."

Emily looked up.

"How do you know?"

Sophie smiled.

"Because every time we talked over the last six months..."

"...he found a way to mention your name."

Before Emily could answer, her pager suddenly sounded.

A trauma alert.

The emergency department.

She instinctively stood.

Duty first.

Always.

"I'm sorry."

"I have to go."

Sophie nodded.

"I understand."

Emily hurried toward the emergency entrance.

Halfway down the hallway, Olivia came running toward her.

"Emily!"

"What happened?"

"Motor vehicle collision."

Emily grabbed a pair of gloves.

"How many patients?"

"One critical."

The ambulance doors burst open.

Paramedics rushed inside.

"We've got a thirty-four-year-old male."

"High-speed collision."

"Chest trauma."

"Possible internal bleeding."

Emily stepped forward.

"Let's move."

The gurney rolled beneath the bright emergency lights.

Emily looked down at the unconscious patient.

Everything inside her stopped.

It was Daniel.

His face was streaked with blood.

A deep cut crossed his forehead.

His heartbeat echoed rapidly through the cardiac monitor.

For one terrifying second...

Emily forgot how to breathe.

Then years of medical training took over.

She looked at the trauma team and spoke with unwavering clarity.

May you like

"I'm the attending physician."

"Let's save him."
