Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Monster

When I walked back into Room 312, Kayla was sleeping peacefully, her breathing slow and even. I sat in the chair beside her bed, my hands clenched into tight fists in my lap. The grief and helplessness I had felt days ago were completely gone, incinerated by a white-hot fury.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. It was a text message from Daniel.

“Are you still sitting around wasting money at that hospital? Get home and make dinner. I’m not playing your games.”

I stared at the screen, a bitter, humorless smile touching my lips. I didn't reply. Instead, I opened my web browser and logged into our shared family cloud storage—the one where Daniel kept all our financial records, tax returns, and digital documents, believing I was too technologically inept to ever look inside.

For two hours, while Kayla slept, I dug through folder after folder.

I found hidden bank statements. I found secret credit cards. And then, buried deep within a password-protected directory labeled Investments, I found what I was looking for.

Life insurance policies.

Not just one. Three separate policies taken out over the past eighteen months on Kayla—each one listing Daniel as the sole beneficiary, totaling over a million dollars.

Beneath them was a digital folder containing medical clearance certificates forged with fake signatures, and an email thread between Daniel and an online chemical supplier inquiring about heavy metal compounds and metabolic disruptors.

The room seemed to tilt. My hands shook so violently I dropped the phone onto the blanket.

He wasn't just negligent. He was planning to murder our daughter for an insurance payout, using slow-acting toxins disguised as health shakes, and blaming her failing health on teenage imagination to keep her away from doctors who might discover the truth.

The door to the hospital room clicked open.

I looked up, expecting Dr. Cole with the toxicology results.

Instead, standing in the doorway, dressed in his expensive gray work suit with a scowl carved across his face, was Daniel.
