Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Daniel stepped into the room, letting the door slam shut behind him with a sharp click. His eyes darted toward the bed where Kayla lay sleeping, then snapped over to me with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

“Are you completely out of your mind, Elena?” Daniel hissed, keeping his voice low so as not to wake her. “Ignoring my calls? Sitting here playing nurse while you rack up tens of thousands of dollars in medical debt we can’t afford?”

I stood up slowly from the chair. I didn't cry. I didn't shake. The cold fury inside me had hardened into steel.

“You’re a sick, twisted monster, Daniel,” I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Daniel’s face flushed red. “Excuse me? Have you lost your damn mind? I’m your husband—!”

“You’re a murderer,” I interrupted, stepping forward. I picked up my phone from the bedside table, unlocked it, and thrust the screen right into his face. “I found the insurance policies, Daniel. I found the forged medical forms. And I found your email inquiries about metabolic disruptors and heavy metal compounds.”

For a split second, the color drained completely from Daniel’s face. His eyes widened, darting across the phone screen before he quickly tried to mask his panic with a sneer.

“You’re hallucinating. You’ve been reading trashy internet conspiracy theories—”

“The hospital is running a full toxicology screen on Kayla’s blood right now,” I cut him off, my voice ringing with absolute authority. “Dr. Cole already knows her tissue samples show artificial chemical irritation. And downstairs, waiting in the lobby right outside this ward, are two detectives from the Redwood Valley Police Department whom I called ten minutes before you walked in here.”

Daniel froze. The arrogant facade shattered instantly, replaced by a cornered rat’s desperate terror.

“You... you didn't,” he whispered, his voice cracking.

“I did,” I said, stepping closer to him, pointing a finger straight at his chest. “You tried to poison our child. You tried to kill my baby for money. And you will never, ever see the outside of a prison cell again.”

Before Daniel could lunge toward me or turn to run, the door swung wide open.

Detective Miller and Officer Vance stepped into the room, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts.

“Mr. Daniel Bennett?” Detective Miller asked, his voice cold and professional as he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Step away from the bed and put your hands behind your back. You’re under arrest for attempted murder and insurance fraud.”

Daniel opened his mouth to protest, but the words caught in his throat. As the officers grabbed his arms, forcing him backward against the wall and snapping the cuffs around his wrists, he cast one last desperate, pleading look in my direction.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I watched without an ounce of pity as they hauled him out of the room, slamming the door shut on his ruined life forever.
