Chapter 5 - The Turning Point

The trial was brief but brutal. Richard’s attempt to paint me as the villain failed when the prosecution produced medical records of my recent surgery and a history of documented complaints from neighbors who had witnessed his aggressive behavior. He was sentenced to time served and probation, with a restraining order that kept him far away from both my mother and me.

I decided to channel my anger into my work. I started a design collective aimed at helping women transition out of abusive living situations, using the skills I had honed during those long, lonely nights at my desk. My work began to gain traction, and for the first time, I wasn't working to "earn my keep" for a man—I was building a legacy of my own.
