Chapter 4 - The Cipher Vault

The secret passages of the Vale Estate were a labyrinth of dusty, narrow corridors built during the Prohibition era. Spiders spun webs across exposed copper pipes, and the distant rumble of thunder vibrated through the stone foundations as Matthew led us deeper into the heart of the mansion.

We climbed a spiral iron staircase that led directly into the wall void behind Alexander Vale’s primary study on the third floor.

Through a small brass peephole masked by a double-sided painting, we could see into the massive room. Alexander was standing behind his mahogany desk, speaking furious orders into a encrypted satellite phone.

"I don't care about the press!" Alexander roared, slamming his glass of whiskey onto the wood. "Scrub the maid's background! Check her dead grandfather's military records! If that little girl knows how to read Ghost-Sign, then the entire multi-billion dollar agreement with the syndicate is compromised! If the board finds out Victoria’s encrypted ledger is sitting inside the boy's mind, they will remove me by force!"

A cold voice answered from the speakerphone. "And the girl and her mother?"

Alexander’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Make it look like a carbon monoxide leak in the staff quarters around 3:00 AM. Staging tragic accidents is our specialty, isn't it? That's how we handled Victoria."

Behind me in the dark corridor, Matthew let out a silent, ragged gasp. Tears spilled over his lashes, but he pressed a hand tightly over his mouth to muffle the sound.

I wrapped an arm around the small boy, pulling him close to my side. He wasn't just a billionaire's heir; he was a terrified, abused orphan who had spent years trapped in a gilded nightmare.

Matthew turned to Lucy and me, his fingers moving rapidly under the faint light of my phone screen.

The Red Ledger isn't a book, he signed, his small hands trembling. It is a hard drive built into the antique grandfather clock in this study. But it needs two passwords. My mother programmed the first one. I carry the second one in my hands.

"Can you unlock it right now?" I whispered, leaning my ear right against his lips.

Matthew nodded. He reached through a tiny floor-level hatch beneath the painting, slipping his hand behind the baseboard of the study. He pulled a small copper lever hidden in the floorboards.

A soft click echoed inside the study. Alexander paused, turning his head toward the grandfather clock in the corner of the room.

"Who's there?" Alexander barked, pulling a sleek black pistol from his desk drawer.

"Run!" I mouthed to the kids.

Matthew snatched a tiny, metallic flash drive that popped out from the clock's side panel through the floor hatch, slipping it into his pajama pocket. But as he pulled his hand back, his sleeve caught on a rusty nail.

The heavy painting shifted on the wall with a loud, wooden thud.

In the study, Alexander's head snapped toward the painting. "So... the rats are in the walls."
