Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel was packed to absolute capacity.

Over six hundred people—top Wall Street investors, corporate board members, high-profile journalists, and flashing news cameras—filled the cavernous space. Giant digital screens displayed the Reed Construction logo, alongside a massive portrait of Arthur Vance and Evelyn Reed.

At the main stage, Evelyn stood behind a glass podium, wearing a dark velvet dress and multi-million-dollar diamond necklace. Beside her stood Arthur Vance, his face flushed and nervous, repeatedly wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Evelyn announced into the microphone, her voice smooth and practiced, though her eyes scanned the back doors anxiously. "Thank you for joining us for the 20th Annual Reed Construction Global Summit. Today, as we honor the memory of my late husband, Richard Reed, we also address a heartbreaking family tragedy."

She lowered her head, putting on an exquisite display of maternal sorrow.

"As many of you have read in the press," Evelyn continued, "my beloved son, Sebastian, has suffered a catastrophic mental relapse. Isolated in his grief, he has fallen under the influence of an opportunistic estate worker who has manipulated his compromised state."

Gasps echoed through the audience. Camera flashes went off like lightning.

"Therefore," Arthur Vance stepped up to the microphone, pulling out a legal document, "the board of directors has officially voted to appoint me as permanent CEO and legal conservator of the Reed Estate, ensuring the stability of our fifty-billion-dollar enterprise—"

BANG!

The heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom were thrown open with such force that they slammed against the marble walls, echoing like a cannon shot through the hall.

Every single person in the room turned around.

The news cameras spun wildly toward the aisle.

Standing in the doorway, bathed in the bright light of the foyer, was Sebastian Reed.

He wore a bespoke dark navy Tom Ford suit, an immaculate white shirt, and a deep blue tie. He was standing completely upright, towering over six feet tall, supported by the subtle, high-tech frame beneath his trousers. On his left side walked David Chen carrying a thick legal binder; on his right side walked me, wearing an elegant emerald silk gown, holding two-year-old Ethan in my arms.

The ballroom exploded into absolute pandemonium.

"MY GOD! IT'S SEBASTIAN REED!" a reporter screamed.

"HE'S WALKING!" shouted another.

Hundreds of camera flashes created a blinding wall of light. Reporters shoved past chairs, scrambling down the aisle toward us.

Evelyn gripped the edges of the podium so hard her knuckles turned blue. Arthur Vance dropped his microphone, his mouth hanging open in sheer horror.

Sebastian didn't hesitate. With calm, measured, powerful strides, the mechanical suit whirring softly beneath his tailored pants, he walked down the center aisle of the ballroom. He didn't look like a sick man; he looked like a resurrected king returning to claim his throne.

He reached the foot of the stage, stepped up the three wooden stairs, and walked straight to the podium.

Arthur Vance tried to step in his way. "Sebastian, you have no right to be here—"

Sebastian didn't even speak. He simply reached out one large, powerful hand and shoved Vance aside with effortless strength. Vance stumbled off the edge of the stage, tumbling onto the carpet below to the roaring laughter of the crowd.

Sebastian stepped up to the microphone. He looked out over the sea of flashing cameras, his brown eyes calm, commanding, and totally devoid of fear.

"Good afternoon," Sebastian said, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the massive sound system. "My name is Sebastian Reed. And as seventy percent controlling shareholder of Reed Construction... I am calling this annual summit to order."

The audience burst into wild cheers and applause.

"For twenty years," Sebastian continued, his voice cutting through the noise like a sword, "a story was told in this city. A story that I was a broken invalid who killed my father in a car crash. A story told by my mother, Evelyn, and Arthur Vance."

He pointed toward the giant digital screens behind him. "David, activate the system."

David Chen plugged a flash drive into the main media console.

Instantly, the giant screens behind Evelyn replaced the corporate logos with high-resolution scans of the suppressed LAPD forensic crash reports, bank records, and wire transfer logs.

"This," Sebastian declared, pointing at the screen, "is the truth. My father’s car was mechanical sabotaged via cut brake lines. My mother suppressed the police report to seize control of the company. And for twenty years, Arthur Vance has embezzled over eighty million dollars from the Reed Family Trust into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands!"

"LIES! IT'S ALL LIES!" Evelyn shrieked into a secondary microphone, her face contorted in psychotic rage. "HE'S DELIRIOUS! SECURITY, ARREST HIM!"

"The LAPD is already here, Evelyn," David Chen announced calmly into a microphone from the side of the stage.

The side doors of the ballroom swung open. Eight uniform LAPD officers, accompanied by detectives from the Major Crimes Division, marched into the room.

"Arthur Vance! Evelyn Reed!" the lead detective announced loudly, pulling out two arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to commit murder!"

The crowd went insane. Reporters rushed forward, snapping hundreds of photos as hand-cuffs clicked around Arthur Vance’s wrists. Vance sobbed, dropping to his knees, while Evelyn screamed obscenities as officers escorted her down the stage.

As she passed Sebastian, she stopped, her eyes wild with hatred. "You destroyed this family, Sebastian! You destroyed everything!"

Sebastian looked down at his mother with an expression of quiet pity.

"No, Mother," Sebastian said softly. "You destroyed the family twenty years ago. I’m just burying the ghost."

As Evelyn was dragged away in handcuffs through the sea of flashing lights, Sebastian turned toward the side of the stage.

He looked at me. He looked at Ethan playing with the yellow blanket in my arms.

Then, before five hundred investors and live national television cameras, Sebastian Reed walked across the stage, dropped to one knee in front of me, and pulled a small velvet box from his jacket pocket.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent.
