Chapter 4 - Shadows from the Past

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was quiet, bathed in the soft blue light of phototherapy lamps and the gentle click-clack of ventilators.

I sat on a small wooden stool beside Isolette #4, wearing a oversized blue gown. Inside the clear plastic box lay my daughter.

She weighed four pounds, two ounces. A tiny feeding tube was taped to her cheek, and a pulse-oximeter clamped around her tiny right foot flickered a steady green number: 98.

Slowly, terrifyingly, I reached my hand through the round rubber portal of the incubator. My fingers—hand-calloused, scarred from a youth spent in rough streets, hands that had signed death warrants for business rivals—looked massive and brutal next to her.

Her tiny hand, no bigger than my thumbnail, instinctively curled around my pinky finger.

A physical wave of emotion crashed over my chest, so heavy it made my ribs ache.

“Hi, little one,” I whispered, my voice sounding rough and foreign in the quiet room. “I’m your dad. I know I’m late. I know I wasn't there when you were kicking in the dark... but I’m here now. I’ve got you.”

The door to the NICU creaked open softly. Jonas stepped inside, holding a thick leather folder. He looked exhausted, his dark coat damp from the rain that had started pouring outside Chicago.

“Boss,” Jonas whispered, stepping up to the incubator and looking down at the baby with a rare, soft smile. “She looks just like you around the eyes.”

“How is Elena?” I asked without taking my eyes off my daughter.

“Dr. Croft arrived from Johns Hopkins an hour ago,” Jonas reported quietly. “She took over the ICU care personally. Elena is on ECMO support to give her heart time to rest. Her brain scan showed no oxygen deprivation during the arrest. Croft says the next forty-eight hours are critical, but she’s stable.”

I let out a long, ragged breath. “And the folder?”

Jonas’s face instantly hardened, the warmth leaving his eyes. He opened the leather binder, revealing bank statements, phone transcripts, and private investigator surveillance photos.

“You asked why she left eight months ago,” Jonas said, sliding a photograph onto the top of the incubator glass.

I looked at the photo. It was taken in the parking garage beneath my corporate headquarters eight months ago—the exact week of our divorce. In the picture, Elena was standing against her car, looking terrified, while a tall man in a dark suit thrust an envelope into her hands.

The man in the photo was Richard Chen.

Madison’s father.

My blood turned to liquid nitrogen. “Explain.”

“Three weeks before your divorce was finalized,” Jonas explained, his voice low and bitter, “Richard Chen’s firm was facing a hostile takeover from your syndicate. Chen knew he couldn't beat you in business or in the streets. So he targeted Mrs. Vance.”

Jonas flipped to a set of bank records and medical lab reports.

“Chen’s men intercepted Elena at her clinic. They showed her forged medical records indicating that you had ordered a hit on a rival family’s heir—a lie, but convincing enough given your reputation. Then, Chen threatened to release doctored financial files to the Federal prosecutor that would put you in prison for life unless Elena signed a non-disclosure divorce, cut all ties with you, and allowed Madison Chen to move into your orbit so Chen Global could quietly drain your offshore accounts.”

I listened, every muscle in my neck locking into iron bands.

“They told her that if she stayed with you, or if she ever spoke to you again, they would send the Federal indictment through,” Jonas continued. “She signed the divorce papers to save you from prison, boss. She walked away into poverty, living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in Rogers Park, working double shifts at a community clinic while pregnant... just to keep Richard Chen’s crosshairs off your back.”

I looked down at my daughter’s tiny face.

Elena hadn't unloved me. She hadn't abandoned our marriage because she was weak.

She had sacrificed her life, her comfort, her reputation, and her happiness to protect the man she loved. She had carried my child in secret, living in terror that if Chen found out she was pregnant with my heir, they would kill the baby to protect Madison’s position.

“Boss?” Jonas asked softly. “What are your orders regarding Chen Global?”

I slowly pulled my pinky finger out of my daughter’s tiny grip. I stood up to my full height, smoothing down the front of my tailored vest.

When I looked at Jonas, the cold, murderous monster that the business world feared had returned—but this time, he had something infinitely more dangerous driving him.

A family to avenge.

“Call our legal team,” I ordered, my voice terrifyingly calm. “Tell them to initiate short-sells on every stock held by Chen Global. Call our enforcement units in New York and Miami. I want Richard Chen’s supply lines frozen by sunrise. And Jonas?”

“Sir?”

“Find Madison Chen. Bring her father to my office at six in the morning. It’s time Richard Chen learned what happens when you touch my wife.”
