Chapter 5 - The Awakening

The Intensive Care Unit smelled of warm antiseptic and heated blanket cotton.
It was 4:00 AM on the second day. The heavy ECMO machine that had been pumping oxygen through Elena’s blood for forty-eight hours had finally been disconnected three hours ago after her heart ejection fraction miraculously climbed back to forty percent.
She was resting under a white duvet, a simple nasal cannula delivering oxygen under her nose.
I sat in the armchair beside her bed, holding her hand. My suit jacket was draped over the back of the chair, my sleeves rolled up to my elbows. I hadn't slept in over forty hours.
A small, soft flutter moved against my palm.
I froze.
Elena’s long eyelashes trembled, fluttering against her pale cheeks. She let out a soft, dry moan, her head turning slowly toward the window.
“Elena?” I called softly, rising from the chair and leaning over the bed rails.
Her eyes opened. They were cloudy, unfocused, but as the harsh morning light hit her face, she focused directly on me.
“Ju... lian...?” she rasped, her lips cracked and dry.
I immediately picked up a small cup of ice chips, placing a piece gently against her bottom lip. She sucked on it greedily, letting out a relieved sigh.
“Where...” she swallowed hard, her hand reaching reflexively toward her stomach. Her eyes instantly went wide with sheer, suffocating panic. Her stomach was flat. “The baby! Julian! Where is my baby?!”
“Hey, hey! Look at me!” I caught both of her wrists gently, pinning her hands softly against the mattress before she could yank her IV lines out. “Look at me, Elena! She’s okay! She’s safe!”
Elena stopped thrashing, her chest heaving as tears flooded her eyes. “She’s... she’s alive?”
“She’s in the NICU three floors down,” I whispered, wiping her tears away with my thumb. “She weighs four pounds, two ounces. She has dark hair, your nose, and a cry loud enough to shatter glass. She’s breathing on her own, Elena. She’s perfect.”
Elena let out a sob—a sound of such raw, overwhelming relief that it broke my heart into a thousand pieces. She pulled her hand free from my grip and covered her face, weeping uncontrollably.
“I was so scared,” she sobbed. “I thought... I thought I lost her in the dark...”
“You didn't lose her,” I said softly, leaning down and kissing her forehead, holding her fragile shoulders against my chest. “You saved her. You fought like a lioness.”
Elena stiffened slightly in my arms. The reality of who was holding her seemed to hit her clouded mind. She gently pushed against my chest, pulling back to look at me with guarded, fearful eyes.
“Julian... you shouldn't be here,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “If Madison sees you... if her father finds out—”
“Richard Chen is currently sitting in a Federal holding cell in downtown Chicago,” I interrupted calmly.
Elena froze. “What?”
“And Madison,” I continued, staring straight into her eyes, “is currently being processed for grand larceny, extortion, and corporate conspiracy. Chen Global filed for bankruptcy three hours ago.”
Elena’s jaw dropped. “How... how do you know about Chen?”
I reached into my pocket, pulled out the worn photograph Jonas had given me, and set it gently on her blanket.
“I know everything, Elena,” I said quietly, my voice laced with painful emotion. “I know about the forged indictment files. I know about the threats against my life. I know you signed those divorce papers to save me from prison, and I know you lived in a damp apartment in Rogers Park for eight months carrying my daughter alone because you thought you were protecting me.”
Elena stared at the photograph, her mouth trembling as fresh tears pooled in her eyelashes.
“Why didn't you come to me?” I asked, my voice cracking with an agonizing mixture of love and rage. “Why didn't you trust me to protect you?! Did you really think that bastard Richard Chen could hurt me?! Did you really think I wouldn't have burned the world to the ground to keep you safe?!”
“BECAUSE THEY HAD PROOF, JULIAN!” Elena screamed back, her weak voice cracking with desperation. “They had documents signed with your personal seal! They had judges in their pocket! I couldn't risk you going to prison for thirty years! I couldn't risk losing you forever!”
She grabbed the collar of my shirt with both hands, pulling me down until our faces were inches apart.
“I loved you!” she sobbed into my mouth. “I loved you more than my own life! I knew if I stayed, Chen would target you. But if I left... if I made you hate me... you would be safe! I thought I could handle the pain of losing you... but then I found out I was pregnant...”
She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her whole body shaking with devastating sobs.
“I was so lonely, Julian,” she wept. “Every night... every time she kicked... I wanted to call you. I wanted you to put your hands on my belly. I wanted my husband...”
May you like
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her completely out of the hospital bed into my lap, holding her against my heart as if I could absorb every single drop of pain she had suffered for eight long months.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered into her hair, tears pouring down my face without shame. “I’m so sorry, Elena. I was blind. I was foolish. I let you walk away... but I swear to God, on my life, on our daughter’s life, no one will ever separate us again.”
