Chapter 4 - The Pier of Shame

The regional port of St. Jude Island was not a luxury destination. It was a humid, loud, bustling commercial hub filled with rusty fishing vessels, cargo crates, and the pungent smell of diesel fuel and drying salt fish.

When the commercial ferry The Sea Sprite groaned against the wooden pilings of Dock 4, Dylan, Harold, and Brooke were the first to rush toward the exit ramp.

They looked wretched.

After two hours standing on the exposed, sun-baked upper deck of the supply boat—having been denied access to the air-conditioned VIP cabin due to their canceled cards—their expensive resort wear was soaked in sweat, grime, and salt spray. Harold’s linen shirt was yellowed at the armpits, Brooke’s heavy makeup had melted into black streaks down her cheeks, and Dylan was clutching a bruised knee from when he had tripped over a rope coil during boarding.

"I'm going to ruin her!" Harold spat, wiping sweat from his red forehead with a filthy handkerchief as he stomped down the metal gangway. "I'm going to call the Atlanta Journal-Constitution! I'll tell them the owner of Azure Crown abuses senior citizens and abandons tourists on remote islands!"

"Dad, shut up!" Brooke whined, dragging her ruined designer suitcase, its wheel broken from the rough gravel. "My skin is peeling! I need a five-star hotel right now! Dylan, call Chloe! Tell her to send her father’s private yacht to pick us up!"

"I've been trying to call her for the last hour!" Dylan yelled frantically, staring at his phone screen. "There's no signal on this damn boat! Once we get to the terminal, I'll call her. Chloe’s father has connections with the state department. He can freeze Megan's accounts before she even gets back to the mainland!"

"You better make sure she does, Dylan!" Harold growled. "Because if I lose my house over your pathetic, trailer-park wife's temper tantrum—"

"I don't think you'll need to call him, Dylan."

A sharp, sophisticated female voice cut through the noisy dock air.

Dylan froze. He slowly lifted his head.

Standing at the end of the gangway, surrounded by four dark-suited security guards, was Chloe Vance. She was wearing a crisp white linen suit, oversized Chanel sunglasses, and an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

Beside her stood a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with silver hair and an aura of immense corporate power: Richard Vance, Chairman of Vance Global Logistics.

"Chloe!" Dylan gasped, his face instantly shifting from misery to desperate relief. He forced a wide, pathetic smile and stumbled forward. "Oh thank God! How did you know we were here?! Megan... my crazy ex-wife... she had a mental breakdown on the island! She attacked my father, stole our credit cards, and—"

SLAP!

The sound echoed loudly across the open pier.

Chloe’s hand struck Dylan across the face with such force that his head snapped to the side, his body stumbling into a stack of wooden fish crates.

"Chloe?!" Dylan gasped, holding his reddening cheek, tears springing to his eyes. "What are you doing?!"

"You absolute, pathetic worm," Chloe hissed, stepping closer, her voice laced with lethal contempt. "You lied to me for a year. You told me you were a single bachelor whose family built the Sterling empire!"

"I am! I mean, I was—"

"Your father's company went bankrupt eight months ago, Dylan," Richard Vance spoke up, his voice heavy as lead as he stepped forward. "And the 'modest trust fund' you boasted about belongs entirely to your wife, Megan Carlisle—the sole heir to the Carlisle Hospitality fortune."

Dylan’s jaw dropped. "How... how do you know that?"

"Because Ms. Carlisle’s personal legal team called my office two hours ago," Richard said, pulling a thick folder from his leather briefcase and tossing it onto Dylan’s chest. "They provided full documentation of your embezzlement, your illegal wire transfers, and the fact that you used my daughter’s name to secure fraudulent bank loans for your firm."

Harold stepped forward, trying to maintain a posture of dignity despite his sweat-stained shirt. "Now see here, Vance! This is a private family matter! My son is a brilliant architect! Your daughter was lucky to have his attention!"

Richard Vance looked at Harold as if he were a cockroach crawling across his shoe.

"Your son is facing twenty years in federal prison, Harold," Richard said flatly. "And as of twenty minutes ago, I personally canceled the forty-million-dollar construction contract with Sterling Developments. In fact, I’ve instructed my legal team to file a formal fraud complaint with the District Attorney."

"No... no, please, Mr. Vance!" Dylan scrambled to his feet, dropping to his knees on the filthy, fish-stained dock, grabbing at Richard’s trousers. "Please don't do this! I love Chloe! I was going to divorce Megan! I was going to marry Chloe as soon as the contract was signed!"

Chloe looked down at him, pulled her phone from her purse, and tapped the screen.

The audio speaker roared to life. It was a video recording—the very video Brooke had recorded at the pool earlier that afternoon, which Peter’s security team had intercepted and uploaded to a private server.

The speaker blasted Harold’s booming voice: “Useless! If you can’t swim, don’t come up!”

Followed by Evan’s choked, terrifying screams: “Mommy!”

And then Dylan’s calm, cruel laughter: “Sit down, Megan. Dad’s just trying to toughen him up.”

Chloe looked down at the weeping man at her feet, her eyes filled with absolute revulsion.

"You sat there and let your father drown your six-year-old child," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling with hatred. "You aren't a man, Dylan. You're a monster. And to think I almost let you touch me."

She turned on her heel and walked toward her waiting limousine.

"Chloe! CHLOE!" Dylan screamed, dragging himself across the filthy wood, but Richard Vance’s bodyguards stepped forward, shoving him back onto the dock with brutal efficiency.

"Enjoy the commercial flight home, Dylan," Richard said coldly, stepping into the car. "Assuming you can afford a ticket."

The limousine doors slammed shut, and the sleek black vehicle sped away, leaving the Sterling family standing in the middle of the smelly, hot fish market, surrounded by mocking fishermen and local dock workers who were already filming their pathetic breakdown on their phones.
