Chapter 7 - The Final Audience

The holding cell behind Courtroom 402 smelled of industrial bleach, stale coffee, and sweat.

When the heavy steel door clicked open, Dylan was sitting on a metal bench, wearing an oversized, dull orange jumpsuit.

The change in him was terrifying. In just eight weeks, the polished, handsome architect who prided himself on his tailored suits and expensive haircut had completely withered away. His hair was greasy and disheveled, his face was gaunt, dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes, and his hands were constantly twitching.

When he saw me step into the room, flanked by two armed corrections officers and Peter, he scrambled off the bench so fast he almost tripped over his own rubber slip-on shoes.

"Megan!" Dylan gasped, his voice raspy and broken. He lunged toward the mesh glass partition separating us, pressing his hands against the cold surface. "Megan, thank God! Thank God you came!"

I sat down on the wooden chair on my side of the glass, placing my hands neatly on my lap. I stared at him with complete, unbothered tranquility.

"You have five minutes, Dylan," I said.

"Megan, please... you have to drop the criminal charges!" Dylan wept, tears instantly pouring down his sunken cheeks. "I can't survive in here! You don't know what it's like! The men in here... they know what I'm charged with! They know I let Dad hurt Evan! They treat me like a monster!"

"You are a monster, Dylan," I stated plainly.

"I made a mistake!" he screamed, slamming his fist against the glass. "I was stupid! I was arrogant! My father was pressuring me, my sister was constantly demanding money, and I was terrified of losing everything! I thought if I made that deal with Vance, I could pay back the money I took from your trust and never bother you again!"

"You didn't just take money, Dylan," I said, leaning in slightly. "You sat by while your family treated me like garbage for six years. You let your mother tell me I was useless because I couldn't cook like a French chef. You let your sister use my clothes to clean up dog mess. You let your father insult my parents."

"I was blind!" Dylan sobbed, dropping to his knees on the concrete floor, clutching his hands together in a desperate prayer. "I was so blind to how good you were to me! You gave me a life I didn't deserve! Please, Megan... for the sake of our son... don't send his father to prison!"

"Don't use Evan to save yourself," I snapped, my voice dropping into a register so lethal that Dylan instantly shut his mouth. "You lost the right to call yourself his father the second you took a sip of your cocktail while he was choking under four feet of water."

Dylan shook his head frantically, his face pressed against the metal mesh. "I love him! I love you, Megan! I swear I do!"

"You don't love me, Dylan," I said softly, standing up from my chair. "You loved the luxury I provided. You loved the illusion of power I allowed you to hold. But the illusion is over now."

I pulled a thick document from my handbag and held it up against the glass.

"This is the final divorce decree and total termination of parental rights," I informed him. "Sign it today, and my legal team will agree not to pursue additional federal tax fraud charges against your father. Refuse to sign it, and Harold will be sharing a cell block with you by Friday."

Dylan stared at the document, his body shaking violently as the full, inescapable trap snapped shut around him. He had no leverage. He had no money. He had no family left to save him.

"You... you destroyed us," Dylan whispered, looking up at me with a mixture of terror and broken awe. "You acted like a sweet, quiet housewife... but you were a viper the whole time."

May you like

"I was a mother protecting her child, Dylan," I corrected him, turning toward the heavy steel door as Peter opened it for me. "You just mistook my patience for weakness."

I walked out of the room, leaving him sobbing on the cold concrete floor, his hands clawing at the empty air where his stolen fortune used to be.
