The video footage from the mantelpiece clock had not been leaked in its brutal entirety—my father’s team had ensured my privacy was protected—but a three-second blurred clip showing Ethan holding the leather whip while shouting threats, accompanied by the crystal-clear audio recording of his voice, was broadcast on national television.

The public reaction was immediate and fierce.

Protesters gathered outside the courthouse holding signs demanding the maximum sentence. Sponsors dropped any remaining corporate ties with Ethan’s former associates. The board of directors of three separate charitable foundations where Ethan sat as a trustee voted unanimously to strip his name from their buildings.

At 2:00 PM, the preliminary bail hearing convened at the Los Angeles Superior Court.

I attended the hearing in person.

I wore a tailored navy trousers suit, my hair styled in an elegant twist, holding my head high as I walked through the side entrance of the courthouse guarded by my father’s security team. I didn't hide behind dark sunglasses or duck from the cameras. I walked into that courtroom with absolute poise.

Ethan was led in through the side door, shackled at his ankles and wrists.

When he saw me sitting in the front row beside my father and Alexander Vance, a look of desperate hope flashed across his pale face. He tried to speak, but his public defender quickly tugged his arm to keep him quiet.

Across the courtroom, Chloe sat at a separate defense table, wearing a orange jumpsuit, her designer extensions looking frayed, her lipstick gone, looking furious and terrified.

Judge Evelyn Vance took the bench.

“We are here for bail determination in the matter of the People versus Ethan Carter and Chloe Jenkins,” Judge Vance announced sternly.

Ethan’s public defender stood up. “Your Honor, my client is a long-term resident of Los Angeles with no prior criminal record. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount so he can assist in his defense—”

“Your Honor,” Alexander Vance interrupted, stepping forward on behalf of the prosecution team. “The prosecution submits into evidence the complete financial audit of Mr. Carter’s offshore transfers over the last forty-eight hours prior to his arrest. Furthermore, we submit the audio file wherein Mr. Carter explicitly threatened to destroy Mrs. Bennett and force her out of the state.”

Vance turned his gaze toward Ethan, his voice cold and uncompromising.

“Mr. Carter possesses access to clandestine international connections through Ms. Jenkins. Given the extreme violence depicted in the physical evidence—specifically twenty severe strikes inflicted with a lethal weapon while the victim was unlawfully restrained—we argue that the defendant represents an severe danger to the victim and an extreme flight risk.”

Judge Vance reviewed the medical photos and the audio transcript on her monitor. Her face hardened into steel as she looked down at Ethan.

“Bail for Mr. Ethan Carter is denied,” Judge Vance declared, bringing the wooden gavel down with a sharp crack. “The defendant will remain in custody at the county facility pending trial.”

Ethan gasped, grabbing the edge of the table. “No! Your Honor, please! I can't stay in there!”

“As for Ms. Chloe Jenkins,” Judge Vance continued, ignoring Ethan’s outburst, “given her multiple false identities and active out-of-state warrants, bail is set at five million dollars, cash only.”

Chloe screamed, turning to curse at Ethan. “You useless piece of garbage! You said you had everything under control! You ruined my life!”

“Take them down,” the judge ordered.

As the bailiffs grabbed Ethan’s arms to lead him out, he twisted his body around, locking eyes with me across the wooden railing.

“Emma!” he screamed, his voice breaking into frantic sobs. “Emma, look at me! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! Please, Emma, talk to me!”

I didn't answer him. I simply sat straight in my chair, watching him get dragged down the concrete stairs into the holding cells below, until the heavy metal door slammed shut behind him.
