Chapter 5 - The Desperate Moves

Three weeks into his pre-trial detention, Ethan was unraveling.

The county jail was not the world of silk sheets, five-star catering, and valet parking he had inhabited for the last decade. He was sharing a concrete cell with a man awaiting trial for armed robbery, eating cold institutional meals, and wearing rough, faded uniforms.

His arrogance had completely evaporated, replaced by a dark, toxic desperation.

On a Tuesday afternoon, Ethan was granted a brief meeting with a disgraced former private investigator named Donald Briggs—a man Ethan had used in the past to conduct corporate espionage against his business rivals.

Briggs sat across from Ethan in the attorney consultation booth, lowering his voice.

“You’re in a deep hole, Carter,” Briggs said, scratching his rough chin. “The Bennett family has completely locked down the legal system. Every judge in the circuit is handling this case with rubber gloves because William Bennett’s media companies are covering every motion.”

“I don't care about the media!” Ethan hissed, leaning close to the wire mesh. “I need leverage, Briggs! There has to be something on Emma! A past lover, a secret bank account, a lie on her tax returns—anything I can use to force her to drop these criminal charges!”

Briggs shook his head slowly. “I spent the last two weeks digging into Emma Bennett’s past, Ethan. You want to know what I found?”

“What?” Ethan demanded eagerly.

“Nothing,” Briggs said flatly. “She doesn't have skeletons in her closet. She graduated top of her class at Stanford, she ran her mother’s charitable trust with zero administrative overhead, and every financial transaction she ever made was vetted by top-tier forensic auditors. The only mistake she ever made in her entire life was marrying you.”

Ethan slammed his fist against the counter. “There has to be something!”

“There isn't,” Briggs replied. “But if you’re looking for a way out... there’s another option. It’s risky, and it’ll cost whatever cash you have left hidden in that Swiss trust you didn't report on your marital disclosures.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “What option?”

“We plant a story,” Briggs whispered, leaning closer. “We leak a narrative through offshore fringe blogs claiming the video was staged as part of an elaborate BDSM roleplay that went wrong, and that Emma orchestrated the entire thing to frame you after discovering your affair. It won't win you the trial, but it’ll create enough public doubt to give your public defender leverage for a plea bargain.”

Ethan’s face twisted into a grotesque, desperate smile. “Do it. Smear her. Make the public think she wanted it.”

He thought he was being clever. He thought he was playing high-stakes chess.

He didn't know that Briggs’s phone was currently tapped by federal investigators who were building a secondary witness-tampering and obstruction-of-justice case against him.

Two days later, before Briggs could even post the first fabricated article online, federal agents raided Briggs’s office in Santa Monica, seizing all his servers and digital hard drives.

By 5:00 PM that evening, Alexander Vance presented the audio recordings of Ethan’s meeting with Briggs directly to the trial judge.

The District Attorney immediately added three new felony counts to Ethan’s indictment: conspiracy to commit witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and felony defamation.

When Ethan was brought back to his cell that night, his public defender was waiting for him with a new legal document.

“What is this?” Ethan asked, his voice trembling.

“It’s a formal notice from the District Attorney,” Ruiz said, looking at Ethan with total apathy. “Because of your attempt to fabricate evidence and intimidate the victim from behind bars, the DA has officially revoked all possibilities of a plea bargain. They are taking you to trial on every single count, and they are seeking the absolute maximum consecutive sentences.”

Ethan dropped the paper onto his metal cot.

The last straw of hope he had been clinging to snapped into pieces.
