Chapter 3 - The Fallout

The aftermath was a hurricane that tore through our social circle. Within forty-eight hours, the news had leaked. Vanguard Capital shares plummeted as federal agents raided the offices. The "happy couple" image Mark and Sarah had projected on social media became a cautionary tale of greed and infidelity.
Sarah’s true nature surfaced within the first week of the crisis. When the luxury car was repossessed and their joint credit cards were frozen, the "glowing" woman transformed into a harpy of resentment. I watched from a distance—as I moved into a secure, quiet apartment—how their relationship turned into a cage match. They weren't partners anymore; they were two drowning people, each trying to use the other as a buoy to stay afloat.
I spent my days preparing for the baby. The stress of the legal proceedings was heavy, but it was replaced by a strange, newfound peace. The trauma of the betrayal no longer defined me; it had become fuel. I received a subpoena to testify, and for the first time in my life, I felt the terrifying, electric power of my own voice.

Mark tried to contact me. His calls were relentless, blocked immediately, but his messages—delivered via intermediaries—shifted from threats to pathetic, groveling apologies. "Alice, I made a mistake. We can fix this. Just drop the charges. Think about the baby."
I deleted the messages without reading them. The irony was suffocating: he wanted me to "think about the baby" now, after he had abandoned us for a life of deceit. I understood then that my power wasn't in the revenge I had dealt him; it was in my ability to simply look away. I had taken his future. Now, I was reclaiming my own.
