Chapter 4 - The Ticking Clock

The final trimester was defined by a ticking clock. My due date was approaching, and the criminal trial against Mark was escalating. The prosecution needed my testimony to solidify the embezzlement charges. I was the star witness, the woman who had brought down the titan.
But danger lurked in the shadows. Mark, desperate and facing a decade in prison, had become erratic. He knew that if I testified, his chances of a plea deal would vanish. One evening, as I returned from a prenatal check-up, I noticed a sedan idling down the street from my apartment. It was the same car I had seen parked near the local cafe earlier that morning.
I didn't call the police immediately. I didn't want to alert him that I was afraid. Instead, I retreated to my sanctuary, locking the doors and double-checking the security system I had installed. I realized that my trump card wasn't just the financial documents. I had kept one secret: a series of voice recordings from the night he had confessed his infidelity to his brother, which also contained a slip of the tongue revealing he had been skimming from his partners long before he met Sarah.
The night before my scheduled testimony, there was a knock at my door. Through the peephole, I saw a courier—or someone dressed as one. I didn't open it. I called my lawyer and the police, my heart hammering against my ribs, not in fear, but in a strange, sharp clarity.
"Alice, it’s not just about the money anymore," my lawyer warned over the phone. "He’s cornered. People like Mark are most dangerous when they have nothing left to lose."

I looked at the framed ultrasound picture on my mantle. "He doesn't have nothing to lose," I whispered. "He still has his freedom. And I’m the only one left who can take that away."
I went to the bedroom, pulled the final file from my hidden safe, and sat in the dark, waiting for the dawn. I was eight months pregnant, alone, and the most dangerous person in his life.
