Chapter 5 - The Chess Piece and the Queen

The transition from my cramped Brooklyn apartment back to the Westchester estate felt less like a rescue and more like an abduction staged with velvet gloves.

I sat in the back of the Maybach, staring out the tinted windows as the sprawling wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate parted automatically for our approach. The grand limestone mansion rose against the rainy night sky like a European fortress, its tall windows glowing with warm amber light.

Luca sat beside me in the spacious leather interior, silent the entire ride, his arm resting protectively across the back of the seat behind me without quite touching my shoulders. He was giving me space—a foreign concept for a man who demanded absolute control over everything he surveyed.

When the car rolled to a halt under the grand portico, the heavy oak front doors opened immediately. A phalanx of household staff stood in neat rows, their heads bowed respectfully.

“Welcome home, Madame,” the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, murmured as I stepped out of the vehicle.

I didn't answer. I felt like a captive bird being returned to a gilded cage.

Luca guided me gently by the elbow—not aggressively, but firmly enough that escape was impossible—up the grand marble staircase toward the master suite on the third floor.

When the heavy double doors of the master bedroom swung open, I gasped.

The room had completely changed since the night I fled. The dark, masculine tones of mahogany and black leather had been replaced with soft creams, warm cashmere throws, and—sitting in the corner by the bay window—a magnificent, custom-built white oak crib adorned with hand-stitched silk blankets.

I stared at the crib, my breath catching in my throat.

“You... you prepared this?” I whispered, turning to look at Luca in disbelief.

“I had it built the month you disappeared,” Luca said quietly, walking over to run his hand along the smooth railing of the crib. “Every time I thought I lost you, I came in here and imagined what it would look like when you finally came back. I knew you’d return, Isabella. Because you couldn't hide from me forever.”

“You’re insane,” I breathed, shaking my head. “You expected me to just walk back into this golden cage?”

Before Luca could answer, a sharp tap sounded at the open double doors.

Standing in the hallway, dressed in an emerald silk evening gown that looked entirely out of place in a domestic crisis, was Vanessa Sinclair.

Her emerald earrings caught the light as she stepped uninvited into the suite, her eyes sweeping over the room, resting with thinly veiled malice on the baby crib and then on my swollen stomach.

“Well, this is a cozy little family reunion,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She walked over to Luca, placing a manicured hand on his lapel. “Luca, darling, your father’s old associates are calling from Chicago. They want to know if this... domestic interruption is going to interfere with the port acquisitions next week.”

Luca’s expression went from soft protectiveness to absolute, freezing wrath in a microsecond.

He didn't yell. He didn't flinch. He simply reached up, took Vanessa’s hand off his lapel, and tossed it away as if it were a piece of trash.

“Get out, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice dropping into an arctic whisper.

Vanessa’s smile faltered, a flash of genuine panic crossing her polished features. “Luca, honey, you can't be serious. After everything my family has invested in—'”

“I said, get out,” Luca interrupted, turning his icy gray eyes directly onto her. “And if you ever set foot on my property again, or mention my wife and child to anyone outside these walls, your family’s shipping empire will be liquidated by sunrise. Do I make myself clear?”

Vanessa paled beneath her heavy makeup. Without another word, she turned on her high heels and hurried out of the suite, the sound of her frantic footsteps echoing down the grand hallway.

Luca turned back to me, his jaw tight.

“She was a mistake, Isabella,” Luca said softly. “A political shield. Nothing more.”

“And what am I, Luca?” I asked, my voice trembling with exhaustion and fear. “Another shield? Another trophy for your collection?”

May you like

“You are my life,” Luca answered without a second’s hesitation, stepping close enough to wrap his arms around me, pulling me gently against his chest.

For the first time in eight months, despite every warning bell screaming in my head, I let my head rest against his shoulder, listening to the steady, rhythmic beating of his heart.
