Chapter 6 - Captured by the Syndicate

For two weeks, the Westchester estate became my golden prison.

Luca treated me like fragile glass. He canceled high-level meetings, refused to leave the estate after dark, and personally inspected every meal brought to our rooms. He was attentive, gentle, and utterly suffocating.

Yet, beneath the surface of the grand estate, a storm was brewing.

Vanessa Sinclair had not taken her public humiliation lightly. Spurned by the most powerful mafia boss in New York and cast out in disgrace, she had done the only thing a cornered socialite with billions in family capital could do: she sold information to our most dangerous rivals—the Santangelo syndicate from Chicago.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon while Luca was locked in the subterranean bunker with his capos, reviewing security logs.

I was sitting in the conservatory, reading a book by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, when the French doors leading to the garden suddenly shattered inward.

CRASH!

Before I could even scream, three masked men in tactical gear swarmed into the room.

“Don't move!” one of them barked, grabbing me roughly by the arm and hauling me out of my chair.

“Let go of me! I’m pregnant!” I cried, struggling against his grip, but my swollen stomach and exhaustion made me helpless against their professional strength.

“That’s the point, Mrs. Moretti,” a cold, unfamiliar voice spoke from the doorway.

A tall man in a tailored gray suit stepped through the broken glass. He wore leather gloves and a sickening, polite smile. His name was Dante Santangelo, the ruthless heir to the Chicago syndicate.

“Luca thought he could lock you away in this fortress and keep his empire intact,” Dante sneered, walking over and tracing a gloved finger along my cheek. “Let’s see how invincible the great Luca Moretti feels when we take his queen and his heir across state lines.”

I tried to kick out at him, but another operative grabbed my legs, lifting me bodily off the floor.

They dragged me out into the pouring rain toward a waiting black van parked on the lawn. As we sped away down the gravel driveway, I screamed at the top of my lungs, knowing the thick stone walls of the estate would muffle my voice.

Ten minutes later, Luca burst into the conservatory, alerted by the silent alarm tripped by the broken glass.

When he saw the shattered French doors, the overturned chair, and my favorite cashmere shawl lying abandoned in the mud outside, the coldest man in New York let out a roar of primal fury that shook the very foundations of the mansion.

He didn't call the police. He didn't consult his capos.

He walked over to the gun cabinet on the wall, smashed the glass with his bare hand, and pulled out a custom-engraved submachine gun.

“Marcus,” Luca called out through the intercom, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.

“Boss?” Marcus answered instantly.

“Saddle every vehicle we have. We’re going to war.”
