Chapter 9 - The Siege Ends

That night, Chicago burned.

From the comfort of the restored estate, under the heavy care of Mikhail’s personal medical team, I watched the news broadcasts on the flat-screen TV. Fires were reported across the industrial warehouses in South Chicago. Callahan’s empire was being torn down brick by brick in a single night of relentless, calculated retribution.

By 4:00 AM, the estate was quiet again.

I was sitting up in bed, my shoulder neatly bandaged, watching the rain trickle down the windowpane. Misha was sleeping soundly in the bed beside me, holding my right hand even in his sleep.

The bedroom door opened quietly.

Mikhail walked in. He had showered and changed into a clean dark shirt, though the exhaustion of a night-long war was etched into his handsome features.

He walked over to the bed and sat on the edge, looking down at his sleeping son, then at me.

“It is done,” Mikhail said softly. “Callahan is gone. His lieutenants have fled the state. The threat to my family has been permanently removed.”

I let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for days. “Is it finally over?”

“It is,” Mikhail confirmed. He reached out, gently running his fingers through my hair. “Your diner is completely repaired, Sarah. I had my men renovate the kitchen, replace the windows, and expand the dining area. You can return to your life tomorrow if you wish.”

I looked down at Misha, then up at Mikhail. The thought of going back to that quiet, empty diner—living alone, cooking for strangers, without Misha’s laughter or Mikhail’s presence—suddenly felt like a sentence of unbearable loneliness.

“Is that what you want, Mikhail?” I asked softly. “For me to go back to my old life?”

May you like

Mikhail took my hand, lifting it to his lips and pressing a soft kiss against my knuckles.

“I have spent my entire life building an empire of fear,” he admitted, his eyes shining in the dim bedroom light. “I thought power was the only thing that could keep my son safe. But you showed me that love is what actually protects him. I don't want you to leave, Sarah. I want you here. By my side.”
